Udupi / Mangaluru, May 30 – Hariram Shankar, IPS, officially took charge as the superintendent of police of Udupi district on Thursday, May 30. The newly appointed superintendent of police for Udupi district has assured firm and proactive policing, vowing to crack down on all criminal and illegal activities with serious and swift action.

Addressing the media after assuming office, SP Hariram Shankar stated, “I had previously served as the assistant superintendent of police in Kundapura, so I am familiar with the Udupi district. I have also served in Hassan and Mangaluru, which gives me broader experience in managing law and order.”

He appealed to the public to maintain peace and avoid involvement in any form of clashes or disturbances that have occurred recently. “My request to the people of Udupi district is to co-operate with the police and work hand in hand. In case of any emergency or urgent information, people can contact me directly or reach out to the police control room. My contact number is publicly available,” he added.

He further said, “The public should immediately report any communal tensions or related issues to the police department. Former SP Arun K has worked tirelessly and with great discipline and dedication. I aim to continue with the same dedication and effort. We have zero tolerance for illegal activities. Rowdyism and gundaism should not disrupt the peace of ordinary citizens. The discipline and organisation instilled in the department under SP Arun K’s leadership will be maintained.”

“As ASP, I had been on night patrols and led several raids. These past experiences will now help me in my new role as SP. I will be accessible to all. We believe in the people of Udupi and want to ensure their trust in law enforcement remains strong,” he stated.

In light of increasing digital misuse, the SP stressed intensified monitoring of social media platforms. “Each police station now has two officers monitoring online activity. We’re not only tracking those who post sensitive or inflammatory content, but also those who share or engage with such posts. Even fake accounts used to spread hate or provoke tensions will be traced and action will be taken. No one is beyond reach.”

On the growing issue of cyber frauds, he noted, “Udupi residents are losing large sums to online scams. We are actively raising awareness and advising people not to fall for lucrative online traps. Our Cyber Economic and Narcotics (CEN) police station is always alert and responsive. We’ve already recovered 35% of stolen mobile phones – one of the highest recovery rates in the country.”

The SP revealed that several theft cases had been solved recently but highlighted the need for broader security initiatives. “Many criminals destroy CCTV cameras. That’s why awareness alone is not enough. We’re considering deploying private-public security patrols in key areas. We aim to reduce the need for citizens to come to the police station by improving outreach. At the same time, our presence should instil fear in those planning criminal acts.”

Recognising traffic woes in the district, the SP said, “With support from our DIG and IG, who have studied traffic deeply, we plan to introduce technology-driven solutions. This will also help us manage staffing shortages and analyse daily traffic challenges more effectively.”
