Kundapur, May 30: In a heart-wrenching incident that unfolded in Gundmi near Sasthana on Thursday, an elderly couple passed away within a few hours of each other.

J Rathnakaraya (84), a retired senior health inspector, and his wife Sarojamma (72), died on the same day. Sarojamma reportedly suffered a heart attack and passed away on Thursday morning.

Rathnakaraya, who was by his wife’s side and grieving her loss, began to experience a decline in his own health shortly afterward. Though the family rushed him to a hospital and sought immediate treatment, efforts proved unsuccessful, and he passed away around four hours after his wife’s death.

The deceased couple is survived by a son and a daughter.

Rathnakaraya had served with distinction as a senior health inspector in various locations including Hiriyadka, Barkur, Kollur, and Kota. He was known for his dedicated service and had earned praise as an exemplary officer. After retirement, he remained active in local organizations and was recognized for his contributions.

He had received several honours for his professional and social service from groups such as the Karkala Geleyara Balaga and the Guru Narasimha Temple, among others.
