Puttur, May 30: A large crack has appeared in the retaining wall constructed as part of the national highway expansion work in Uppinangady, raising serious safety concerns among locals.
The retaining wall, which stands over fifteen feet tall, had already drawn suspicion from residents during its construction, who questioned its quality and brought the matter to the attention of officials. However, it is reported that the concerns were ignored at the time.

Notably, a similar retaining wall built on the opposite side of the highway in the same area had collapsed two years ago. Fortunately, the location was not in a high-traffic zone, and no major damage occurred. However, the current crack has emerged in a wall adjacent to a road frequently used by schoolchildren, leading to heightened worry among residents.
Expressing concern over the situation, MLA Ashok Kumar Rai said the visible crack raises serious doubts about the quality of the construction. He urged authorities to take the issue seriously and ensure immediate repairs.
KNR project officer Mahendra Kumar Singh, who inspected the damaged wall, said the crack does not appear dangerous upon initial observation. He suggested it may have resulted from discrepancies during the fitting of wooden panels in the construction phase. However, he assured that a comprehensive inspection of the structure will be undertaken.
