Carmel School hosts insightful AI workshop, equipping educators for the future

Media Release

Mangaluru, May 29: Carmel School buzzed with excitement as an enlightening workshop on Artificial Intelligence on May 23, unfolded under the guidance of two distinguished resource persons – Fr Anil Fernandes, director of the Canara Communication Centre, Mangaluru, and Leo Victor, director of Oxidane Enviro LLP, Mangaluru.

Designed exclusively for educators, the workshop opened doors to the dynamic and evolving realm of Artificial Intelligence. It explored the deep-seated world of AI, unravelling the mysteries of platforms such as ChatGPT, Co-pilot, Perplexity, and Gemini.

The sessions aimed to demystify how AI functions by processing inputs, identifying problems, making predictions, and executing specific tasks, thereby enhancing efficiency and creativity in educational spaces.

The facilitators delved into the three major types of Artificial Intelligence: Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI), which is task-specific; Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), which mimics human cognitive abilities; and Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI), an advanced concept of machines that surpass human intelligence.

The concept of Generative AI was introduced, highlighting its ability to produce text, images, and voice outputs using Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Large Language Models (LLMs). Thought-provoking explanations were given on LLMs, described as "stochastic parrots" — systems that generate probable responses — shaped through supervised fine-tuning, reward models, and Reinforcement Learning with Human Feedback (RLHF).

One of the key takeaways was the six-step prompt checklist, which outlined the essential elements of effective prompting: persona, task, context, examples, format, and tone. This segment equipped teachers with the ability to design precise and productive prompts to communicate better with AI tools, especially in academic contexts.

The facilitators emphasised how proper prompting can make AI a powerful assistant rather than a confusing or intimidating tool. The workshop also featured hands-on sessions where participants explored educational AI tools.

Using MagicSchool, educators created interactive quizzes; Leonardo AI brought visuals to life by transforming images into animations; Gamma helped design impactful PowerPoint presentations; Eleven Labs showcased AI-generated voice recordings; Canva provided design solutions; and Suno amazed participants by producing AI-generated songs. These practical demonstrations sparked creativity and offered direct applications of AI in lesson planning, content creation, and student engagement.

The AI seminar was graced by the esteemed presence of Sr Rose Veera, the principal; Sr Dr Prem, the administrator; and Sr Premal, the vice principal. Prathiba warmly welcomed the gathering, introduced the resource persons and Mithila delivered the message of thanks. The workshop received high praise from all attendees for its clarity, depth, and practical relevance.

It was a proof to Carmel School’s commitment to staying at the forefront of educational innovation. By blending leading-edge technology with core values, the institution continues to empower its educators and students alike to embrace the future with confidence and curiosity.
