Moodbidri: Woman electrocuted after stepping on live wire in Irvailu, locals protest

Daijiworld Media Network – Moodbidri

Moodbidri, May 29: A 52-year-old woman tragically lost her life after accidentally stepping on a snapped live power line in Irvailu near Moodbidri on Wednesday May 28.

The deceased has been identified as Lilli D’Souza. Due to strong winds and rain, an overhead electric wire had snapped and fallen near the cattle shed adjacent to her house. Unaware of the fallen live wire, Lilli stepped on it and suffered a fatal electric shock.

Angered by the incident, locals blamed the negligence of MESCOM (Mangalore Electricity Supply Company) for the tragic death. Villagers staged a protest at the site, demanding immediate suspension of the responsible MESCOM official.

I wonder how many of the norms as stipulated by CEAR namely Central Electricity Authority (Measures relating to Safety and Electric Supply) Regulations, 2010 are followed by this power utility company??

This is a negligence of MESCOM in not following safety steps. When a live wire breaks and falls on wet ground , there should be a safety circuit breaker to disconnect it from power supply.

It is impossible to run underground power cable rural area considering the cost of it and nook corner connections. Kuwait as well as in Indian metropolitan cities is possible. Ex, one under ground 3 phase power cable to one building can feed hundreds of houses thus make it cost effective.

Very sad .May her soul rest in peace.Protest from villagers will not impress MESCOM.Whether they noticed or care for protest? In monsoon its normal live wires falling down ,nobody notices. One has to be careful not to go barefoot.Heartfelt sympathies to her family.

This happens every time, especially in the monsoons, many times their own personnel end up dying by electrocution; the victims should get together and file a class action suit against this sloppy organisation; am sure the honorable courts will accede to their pleas!
