We had great hope that our city, Mangalore, would one day compete with tier-one cities. However, it now seems this will remain only a dream, given the never-ending communal hatred driven by political interests. The city already lacks basic infrastructure, and investors will think twice before considering it. As a result, many people may be forced to migrate elsewhere in search of better opportunities and prosperity.

Everytime after 2-3 years of calm, people start expecting some level of growth and investments here so that the youth get some quality employment oppurtunities. Then all of a sudden communal tension arises cutting down all those hopes of the current generation of forcing them to move to other cities in search of jobs. This has been happening consistently over the 20 years. When almost all tier 2 & 3 cities in South India grew rapidly providing jobs for its youth, we failed miserably. People here are in general very well educated & law abiding. Still no growth comes this way. Airport, seaport, railways, national highways its all here but under utilized or mismanaged for someones benefit. What grew? only high rise apartments, many of which are largely unoccupied and price of land just sky rocketed in the city. This whole place is being treated as business by some rich folks across all communities. Oh yes, communal fights seems to happen not in the city but outskirts where the poor lives. There is a pattern!
