Bantwal, May 28: An FIR has been registered against 15 individuals, including two locals identified as Deepak and Sumit Acharya, in connection with the murder of Kolthamajalu Jumma Masjid secretary and pickup vehicle driver Abdul Rehman (32), and the attempted murder of one Kalandar Shafi. The case has been filed at the Bantwal rural police station.
According to the complaint, Deepak and Sumit, who were known to both Abdul Rehman and Kalandar Shafi, are among the accused. On the day of the incident, Rahim and Shafi had loaded sand into a pickup truck from a stream and were delivering it to the house of a man named Rajeevi in Ira Kodi, Kuryal village. It is reported that Deepak, Sumit, and a group of 15 men suddenly attacked them.

The assailants allegedly dragged Abdul Rehman from the driver's seat and brutally assaulted him with swords, knives, and iron rods. When Kalandar Shafi tried to intervene, he too was stabbed in the chest, back, and hand, and slashed with a sword. As locals began to raise an alarm, the attackers fled the scene with their weapons.
While being rushed to the hospital in an ambulance, a severely injured Kalandar Shafi managed to identify two of the attackers, Deepak and Sumit, as acquaintances. This information was conveyed to the police by Mohammad Nisar, who admitted Shafi to the hospital and subsequently filed the complaint at the Bantwal rural police station.
Abdul Rehman, who succumbed to his injuries, was known for his role as secretary of the Kolthamajalu Jumma Masjid and was reportedly well-regarded in the community. Kalandar Shafi, a daily wage labourer, also had a good reputation among local residents.
The complaint further states that the assailants may have committed the crime out of communal hatred or other motives. Deepak, Sumit, and others, all known to the victims, are alleged to have played an active role in the attack.
