Heavy rains lash Maharashtra; One dead, 48 rescued as flooding hits several districts

Mumbai, May 26: Torrential rains pounded parts of Maharashtra on Monday, leaving one person dead due to lightning in Raigad and prompting rescue operations across multiple districts, including Mumbai, Pune, Solapur, and Satara.

According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office, as many as 48 people were rescued from inundated areas across the state. Among them were 30 residents stranded near Dudhebavi village in Phaltan, Satara, who have been provided with shelter and food. A National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team has been deployed in the region, which recorded 163.5 mm of rainfall.

The districts of Pune, Solapur, Satara, Raigad, Mumbai, and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) bore the brunt of the monsoon fury. Pune's Daund recorded 117 mm of rainfall in 24 hours, Baramati 104.75 mm, and Indapur 63.25 mm. Baramati reported 25 houses partially collapsing, while seven persons were rescued from flooded zones. Around 70–80 families have been shifted to safer areas.

In Indapur, two people were rescued from rising waters. In Solapur's Malshiras taluka, six people trapped by floodwaters were also moved to safety. However, rescue efforts are ongoing for three individuals stranded in the Bhima river bed near Pandharpur.

The tragedy in Raigad occurred when a person was struck by lightning. Meanwhile, the Mahad–Raigad Fort Road has been shut due to flooding.

Mumbai witnessed 135.4 mm of rain in the past 24 hours. The downpour caused waterlogging at six locations, 18 short circuits, and five wall collapse incidents. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The city’s emergency services, including the fire brigade and police, remain on high alert. Five NDRF teams have been deployed across Mumbai for emergency response.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is closely monitoring the situation and remains in constant contact with the chief secretary and State Disaster Management Unit. Immediate surveys have been ordered in the affected areas to assess the damage.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast more rainfall in Mumbai and adjoining districts in the next 24 hours, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds. The CM's Office has assured that all precautions are being taken to ensure public safety and mitigate the impact of the severe weather.
