Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi

Udupi, May 19: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts for May 20 and 21, forecasting heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder, lightning, and strong winds due to a low-pressure system over the Arabian Sea. The rain is expected to continue till May 22, marking an active pre-monsoon phase along the coastal region.

Widespread rainfall was recorded across the districts from Monday afternoon. In light of the forecast, the Dakshina Kannada district administration has taken precautionary measures. Deputy commissioner Mullai Muhilan has directed parents to ensure children do not venture near low-lying flood-prone areas, lakes, rivers, or seashores. He has also instructed officials at the district and taluk levels to remain stationed at their headquarters and to be fully prepared for disaster management operations.

Advisory to fisher folk

The district administration has instructed incident commanders appointed across various areas to remain alert, respond promptly to public grievances, and stay in constant contact with the district control room. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea. Those who have already set out have been asked to return to shore immediately.

The deputy commissioner has also cautioned tourists and the public against visiting riverbanks or seashores during this period. All relevant departments have been instructed to set up vigilance centres in every taluk and maintain a state of readiness.

Red alert in Udupi as well

Moderate rainfall was recorded across several parts of Udupi district, including Udupi city, on Monday. With the possibility of heavy rainfall on May 20, a red alert has been issued for the district as well.

Heavy rain lashed the Malpe coastal area on Monday, May 19 morning. Showers were also recorded from Adi Udupi to Bannanje, although areas from the city bus stand towards Manipal remained dry. By evening, the sky was overcast and there was moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder.

Fishermen warned

Due to the low-pressure system, strong winds are expected along the coastal belt. The IMD has advised fishermen to exercise extreme caution if heading out to sea.

This directive for Udupi was issued by Dr Vidya Kumari, deputy commissioner and chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority, who stressed the need for vigilance and preparedness across all levels of administration.
