Student murder: Cong govt in damage control mode, assures action as per law

Bengaluru, April 20 (IANS): The Congress government in Karnataka has switched to damage control mode in the backdrop of public outrage over the handling of MCA student Neha Hiremath's murder case.

Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar said on Saturday: “Everyone involved will be booted into the prison. I was told that it was a personal matter. But, action will be initiated as per the law, and those involved will be kicked into the prison.”

“We have asked the Ministers to visit the victim’s family. No mercy on anyone. Minority leaders have also spoken about it. The punishment will be given according to the law,” state Congress President Shivakumar stated.

When asked about the murder allegedly being a case of 'love jihad', Shivakumar stated that he couldn’t explain a statement made by someone else.

Minister for Women and Child Welfare Laxmi Hebbalkar visited the residence of the murder victim to pay her condolences on Saturday, during which, Niranjan Hiremath, father of the victim, broke down into tears and pleaded that the murderer be given stringent punishment.

The Minister stated: “I have assured the parents that the community and I stand with the family. We will get justice for their daughter. There would be unbiased investigation and there shall be no doubt about it. This is a heinous act and incidents like this should be prevented. The police will be given a free hand in the investigation.”

Home Minister Dr G. Parameshwara, who earlier stated that Fayaz, the accused, and Neha were "in love", regretted his statement and apologised to the parents of the victim.

Meanwhile, former Chief Minister H. D. Kumaraswamy slammed Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Dy CM Shivakumar over the matter.

Kumaraswamy said: “Both the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister have tarnished the image of a family that led a respectful life. Those statements were issued irrespective of the fact that she was the daughter of a Congress corporator. If these two great personalities are not able to protect their own corporator’s daughter, how would they protect the state?”

Meanwhile, the parents of the victim also slammed the Congress party and leadership, and asked them to not bring disrepute to their family at a time when their daughter was murdered and they were grieving.

I remember some years back similar attempt to murder took place near ks Hegde medical College becoz of failed love. If such attention and public protest was shown to every such incidents irrespective of religion of accused, by now I think some good law for speedy justice would have come. But when we show selective outrage, such greusome crime wil be more about communal propaganda rather than violence against women

What does he mean by “minority leaders have spoken about it?” What if they don’t speak? Does he need to take any sectional advice to initiate action against a criminal? So he made the statement upon hearing the views of a section of society and not by consulting law enforcement officials. By such statements he is denigrating his own power.

This congress corporator has said that it’s not a one day incident that killed her daughter but it has been planned since long back. So, when he was aware of this why he didn’t complain to police of these activities behind his daughter??????…Now why he is shedding crocodile tears and blaming his own party???????….He knew the murderer and he knew the gang behind it and he knew it’s his daughter’s life in line but still he let it happen at whose behest and benefit??????….

FYI, he did not enquire and got information in his statement but he already knew about it and he had named four persons involved in this incident to police. Who stopped him from complainIng it to the police before this tragedy took place???????…..Congress is certainly not the beneficiary here but certainly do a fair investigation as in the case it did in Rameshwar Cafe not shielding Muslim culprits unlike BJP gives clean chit to daylight rapists and murderers so Shubha be careful you may be next.

A young budding girl's life has been extinguished forever. We all feel the pain of her parents. This incident is not a open and shut case. There is something sinister to it and the govt cannot be casual on this matter.

BJP is playing petty politics with girl’s death. Other than blaming for self advantage neglecting and disrespecting the sentiments of the family BJP is doing nothing except spreading rumours and lies for vote bank. Investigation is underway so anything spoken publicly would be subjudice and could jeopardize the investigation process. Congress has shown transparency, unbias and honesty while investigating Rameshwara cafe culprit who were Muslims, so no appeasement and coverup for accused regardless of their religion. BTW, if the father of the girl has no confidence in congress’s investigation then he can leave the party and join BJP which gives him more money to spread lies hatred on congress. So now it becomes more clear that that the murder was the handiwork of BJP who are champions in this misendevours.

Because of the NIA interference congress givt couldn't do anything to save their brothers. Why home minister always giving statement in favour of minorities without verifying. After he came to know that corporator is from congress he started apologising. Let the people of karnataka feel the heat fir electing wrong govt. Well done cong govt.

FYI, no NIA or no CBI or no IT or no ED or anybody can enter any state without the state govt’s permission. It’s congress govt’s honesty and transparency that allowed NIA for a fair and unbiased investigation knowing again that NIA is one of central govt paid tattoo. Recent Rameshwaram cafe accused was a Muslim which congress govt did not cover up nor gave any clean chit. If it was BJP govt then even he was a Muslim he would have been given clean chit with garlands and promotion for job well done. People of Karnataka are watching this very closely and again will give a similar if not 100% verdict like last time.
