Muscat: Bunts and coastal community celebrate Vishu Ugaadi in Oman

Muscat, Apr 18: The bunts community of Oman, celebrate a multitude of festivals and traditional cultural activities reflecting the rich traditions, enlivening the cherished memories of its members. Among these, Yugadi or Vishu holds special significance for the coastal community, especially Bunts marking the Tuluva New Year with joyous fervour. Ugadi is an occasion for a new beginning, setting off the start of a new year in the spring season,the regeneration of mother nature. With the advent of spring, Mother Nature bestows us a season of Vegetables, fruits, leaves, and plants.

On April 14, Vishu united Tuluvas to usher in the new year at Shree Krishna Temple Hall, Oman. The spirit of renewal and prosperity pervaded the celebrations, characterized by unique customs. Vishu Kani is set up, consisting of a mirror, fresh fruits, vegetables, and grains, along with a new set of clothes. The idea behind Vishu Kani is to start the new year by seeing auspicious symbols of mother nature first thing in the morning. Not just on the day of Vishu but waking up in the 'Brahma muhurta' every day is said to enhance mental and physical well-being. According to astronomy the time between 04.58 am and 7.50 am on April 14 is perfect for Vishukkani viewing. Also the Vishu kaanike – the practice of gifting money to the devotees, is performed heralding the prosperity in the year ahead.

Event was organised by bunts of Oman, under the direction of Saroja Shashidhara Shetty, Sudheera Diwakar Shetty, Shaina Ganesh Shetty, Vanishree Nagesh Shetty, Shreya Manoj Shetty, Anusha Shishir Rai Suraksha Harshith Rai, Bunts of Oman patrons and volunteers.

Vishu transcends mere cultural celebration. It is a time for Bunt expats to connect, enjoy nature's gifts, pray for abundance in life, cherishing their heritage and traditions. Recognizing its importance, prominent coastal communities and Keralites participated in the Vishu celebration solidifying the spirit of cultural inclusivity that defines the nation, fostering a sense of belonging among residents from all backgrounds.
