Mangaluru: SJEC celebrates National Science Day with DK, Udupi school students

Mangaluru Feb 28: St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC) AICTE IDEA Lab in association with department of chemistry observed National Science Day 2024 at SJEC on Tuesday February 28 to mark the discovery of the Raman Effect by Indian physicist Sir C V Raman in 1928, which led to his Nobel Prize in physics in 1930.

The programme was conducted for the school students of Dakshina Kannada (DK) and Udupi district.

The event started with a video presentation about SJEC followed by the invocation and lamping the light to officially inaugurate the Science Day Event.

Vedavathi Rao, nodal officer, Atal Tinkering Lab, said, “We are now lot more dependent on science and there is need to create awareness among students on contribution of our scientists.”

Karthik Attavar, CEO, Section Infin-8, said, “Science is all about asking the right questions and rich questions, seeking answers. Be curious to make discoveries which turn out to be innovations leading the country to create wonders through science.”

Dr Rio D'Souza, principal, SJEC addressed the gathering and said, “There are many scientific discoveries in this world. Students need to have the courage to ask the questions which leads to answers and thereby building knowledge. I urge students to keep on trying and striving hard till you succeed.”

Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, director, SJEC, in his presidential address said, “Science has become a very important element of our life. Let Science be the way of life to ignite the passion within us. Opportunities will create innovation.”

Fr Kenneth Rayner Crasta, assistant director, SJEC, Dr K Jyothi, HOD, chemistry department, convenor Dr Vijay V S and Sheethal Fernandes, HR manager, Rakesh Lobo, deans and HODs of various department were present.

As many as 28 teams with 250 students and 35 teachers across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are taking part in National Science Day programme. For the day, a number of events are scheduled, including a project exhibition, technical events and visit to the SJEC AICTE IDEA Lab and other state-of-the-art facilities on the campus, talks by the chief guest etc. The event is aimed at promoting scientific temper and creating awareness about the importance of science and technology among school students.

Dr Vijay V S welcomed the gathering and introduced the chief guests, co-convenor Sheethal Fernandes rendered the vote of thanks and Olivia Sequeira compered the event.
