Mangaluru: Cashew exports hit as Houthi rebels target ships in Red Sea

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (EP)

Mangaluru, Jan 17: The ongoing conflict involving Houthi rebels in Yemen, who have been attacking ships in the Red Sea to express solidarity with Gaza, is taking a toll on cashew exports from the district.

The district, home to approximately 250 cashew factories, typically exports around 5,800 tons of cashew nuts annually. With an annual cashew production of 2,45,000 tons, the adverse impact of the attacks is felt significantly.

Kalbavi Consumer Foods Private Limited, a Mangaluru-based company and one of the leading exporters of raw cashews, stated that they are now redirecting exports to Africa due to the attacks.

Post-attacks, ships are compelled to alter their routes, sailing through the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. This rerouting results in an additional 6,300 nautical miles and a 15-day delay in transit. As a consequence, cashew exporters from the district are incurring an extra cost of $2,000 per container for shipping goods.

The conflict has led to the unfortunate situation of more than 19,000 ships being stranded in the Red Sea, further exacerbating delays in shipments.

This is not good news to cashew Exporters and Indian Business. Ease of doing business is when the concerned authorities look in to this immediately and try to resolve the issue. Loss incurred by the Cashew Exporters is substantial and Govt will have to do something in this matter on a priority basis.

"A thread will tie an honest man than a chain a rogue/Rebellion." In the present Israel v/s Palestine skirmishes what Yemeni Houthi Rebels got to do they are being supported/financed by Iran (including their proxies.) t looks like Palestine sentiments are only crocodile tears and hoodwinking the the world countries on the pretext of a humanitarian reason. Now entered PAK airspace in violation of international norm and that is as bad as instigating and provoking violence in the middle east.

It's disheartening to witness a situation where some readers chose trade over innocent lives. It's crucial for society to find a balance that values both economic interests and the well-being of individuals. Striking a compassionate and ethical equilibrium should be the collective goal to ensure a just and humane coexistence.

I am still interested to know details of a timely US$6 billion deal agreed between Iran & US in August'23. Is it to buy time until elections are over in the US? Signatures of Iran all over the troubles we are facing which started from Israel-Hamas conflict, Houthis, Lebanese-Hizbollah and yesterday Pakistan. Iran was under sanction for quite some time and it being behind the wreck that is middle east, Red Sea, etc., is strange or is it not? Police ka dosti aur dushmani donon mehengi hoti hai...is Iran aware of this? https://www.nytimes.com/2023/08/10/us/politics/iran-us-prisoner-swap.html#:~:text=The%20United%20States%20and%20Iran,people%20familiar%20with%20the%20deal.

Houthis are creation of US and Israel as Taliban, now turned against them. ME countries less depend on US as earlier and China gained more after Hamas/Israel conflict. Houthis act will impact world trade, World will go darkness if they touch International Data cable which is gone through Red Sea.

Why Indian govt. remains silent when commercial ships are being attacked by Yamani pirates and disrupting flow of goods/Oil passing through Red sea.? Every time why only US has to come forefront to control the free and safe passage of Ships. Now UK also have supporting US in their efforts to bring the unlawful activities to justice. India must strive to raise concern and join US and other World Nations in opposing such rogue activities in international waters.

Then what about those 75years prior to October 7th. Their logic is simple, whichever country is supporting this genocide, they wanna cause them business loss so that they cannot provide funding to Israel. There's nothing wrong with it.
