BJP claims emergency-like situation in Karnataka, Congress retorts

Bengaluru, Jun 6 (IANS): The new Congress government and the opposition BJP in Karnataka are slowly getting into confrontational mode over a plethora of contentious issues.

The Congress government has made it clear that it would repeal all anti-people laws made during the previous BJP regime. Its plan to repeal the anti-cow slaughter law is resulting in a war of words between the leaders of two parties.

"It is not even a fortnight in Karnataka after Congress assumed power, but the repeated statements of ministers warning imprisonment every time, reminds the strategy of Congress during emergency in 1975," former CM Basavaraj Bommai stated on Tuesday.

Basavaraj Bommai (left) and Dinesh Gundu Rao

"If you think in the beginning stage itself that the mandate given by the people is to trample the opposition, you will have to pay a heavy price," Bommai told the ruling party.

Speaking on the statements of Congress ministers over any opposition against the revision of the law on cow slaughter, textbook revision, Bommai remarked that the Congress leaders have already got hang of the power.

"If the statements of a few ministers are observed, they are actually curtailing freedom of speech. They are talking in a fashion that they will bulldoze the opposition's point of view. It is feeling like Karnataka state is entering a state of emergency. One of the ministers says he will hit the officer with a knife. The people have given the mandate to serve the people, not misuse it. We as an opposition party won't sit quiet. Let the Congress jail anyone they want. The jails won't be sufficient if people turn against you," Bommai stated.

"We are not an Islamic country to dominate over people, we will not allow an emergency as people hold the key to democracy. We will not give any room for this development," he added.

Commenting on Bommai's statements, Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dinesh Gundu Rao retaliated on Tuesday, "Mr Bommai, which emergency situation are you talking about? Don't you feel that your PM Narendra Modi government's ways of misusing investigating agencies to trample on freedom of speech is like an emergency situation?"

He further attacked that the BJP leaders are acting like a cat which had burnt its tail after losing elections. "Mr Bommai, as a responsible government we need to keep the healthy society intact. I pity your discretion for making judgment on action taken against those who violate laws and take law into their hands is dubbed as an emergency situation," he charged.

"Are you with those who violate the law?" Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao questioned Bommai. Bommai replied saying all these years those who violated laws and committed crimes took shelter under the Congress led UPA government. "Now, the central government has initiated legal action against those who violated laws. All this is being done within the purview of monitoring of the judiciary," he stated.

Emergency like situation? C'mon, that is exaggeration. State and Central Government are no different from middle class. They want to spend, but income is limited. Yes, leakages in the form of corruption is what sustains this model that we understand as democracy. But there is no emergency like situation, let us face it please!. Siddu wanted power and he got it through wrong means (run treasury empty and make Karnataka bankrupt). If most money made by Govt goes to people and there is less money for corruption, we should try this model for some time because, we cannot belittle the electorate who returned Siddu DKShi combine to power. They will respond in kind when this model does not work and realize there are no free lunches. BJP of Bommai was corrupt and there were competing interests. We have this golden combination that cherishes to celebrate Tipu Jayanthi precisely because of that. Every vote counts.

Looks like corrupt BJP leaders are feeling they been strangulated. Though protection from center is always available to them, which gives a machine machine effect for all the corrupt to come out clean, associating with BJP, may be some are feeling the danger is either side. Like Yuddi, Shettar, who been sidelined, presumed as liabilities by BJP leadership. On other hand with curbs on immoral policing, hafta vausli too will be harder.

I dont care about emergency or party fighting. But worried about travel. This free bus pass gurantee is also not as they promised. Before election there were no any conditions. Now they are putting conditions. With this we can travel only in red bus. All red buses are scraped already. So govt stopped these red buses. Will have only 2 red buses out of 10 buses in our route. Govt must include all buses rajahamsa, airavata, AC and EV buses. Then only the gurantees is given as promised before election. Otherwise this gurantee also duplicate like gruhayoti gurantee.

Dear Madam. I too dont care about BJP -Congress argument. I manage 2 private busses. If ladies travel free and men in discount in Government busses, where would we have revenue from ? .We have taken Lakhs of Rupees in loan, Tax every 3 months is 50 thousand, 80 to 90 thousand in insurance., Stand fees in thousands . Diesel , maintenance etc. List is never ending. 15-20 families earn their livelihood in my set up. If we do not have passengers where do we go? What do we do? As it is we have been hit hard by the Corona and just recovering. Will the Govt give us something as free? I think soon we will be on the roads.

Ronald, you need not worry as most people who travel in buses are concerned about the timing and availability of seats either standing or sitting. Ladies going to work can't afford to reach late . Just wait for a few months, people are more concerned about time and availability more than free travels unless they are jobless and all the time in the world to save some expenses. Other Freebies are more luring to those women than free travels for daily commuters.

Enjoying freebees is not our fundamental right therefore don't depend on all these election time gimmicks and handouts. Just to remain in power all these governments successively made the people lazy and dependent by handing out all nonsense bhagyas wasting hard earned tax payers money. All these bhagyas are to be limited only to old, sick, handicapped, small children , disabled and all able bodied men and women should be given jobs to earn the living. All these freebees are just other form of corruption.

Probably he doesn’t realise the has been thrown out by voters in Karnataka and BJP is struggling to find an opposition party leader in Karnataka.
