Mangaluru, May 27: MLA of Mangaluru legislative assembly constituency and speaker of assembly U T Khader visited Ucchila, Battampady and Sea Ground areas of Ullal, which are prone to sea erosion every year and took stock of the situation.

Khader held discussions with deputy commissioner Ravikumar M R and other officials. Speaking to the media, Khader said, “As we did permanent work to prevent sea erosion at Kodi, Kotepura, Mogaveera Patna, Subhash Nagar and Hilleria, the sea erosion has stopped completely. Now the same needs to be done at Someshwara, Ucchila and Battampady areas. Though first phase work is done in this regard, the road was washed away into the sea during last monsoon. So in order to undertake the work before monsoon, I have held discussions with concerned officers.

“NITK experts have already given a report on the permanent work that needs to be carried out to prevent sea erosion in these areas. I will give the report of the experts and urge the chief minister (CM) to take necessary steps. I will also urge the CM to hold emergency temporary work to prevent sea erosion in Ucchila, Battampady and Mukkacheri,” he said.

Meanwhile, Khader also visited Ullal Dargah for the first time after becoming the speaker of Karnataka legislative assembly.

Speaking to reporters after his visit to Dargah, Khader said, “As the public of Mangaluru constituency voted me to power with faith, it was possible for me to become the speaker today. However, my position will not be a barrier for my contact with the people of my constituency. With the improvement of pending development of infrastructure, I will turn the constituency into a model one in the next five years.

“I am a common people representative of my constituency in addition to being a speaker of the assembly now. I have called the officials of various departments within hours of assuming speaker position and gave instructions to carry out implementation of pending projects like uninterrupted drinking water supply 24 hours of the day, four-lane smart road from Abbakka Circle to Mukkacheri, road beautification from Abbakka Circle to beach and works related to improvement of tourism,” said Khader.
