Mangaluru: RTO directs all bus operators to mandatorily display nameplates in Kannada

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Sep 28: The Regional Transport Office (RTO) has made it mandatory for buses operating in Mangaluru, Udupi and Manipal to put up nameplates in Kannada within the next seven days.

This decision was taken at a Janaspandana meet held here recently.

The RTO has directed all bus operators to display route numbers and destination on the nameplates in Kannada along with the existing English nameplates.

District RTO has warned of stern action if the bus operators do not display nameplates in Kannada after the deadline expires, according to a press release issued here.

I agree that destination details should also be in kannada along with English. But nameplates in kannada is nothing but misplaced priority. If they said nameplate in Tulu instead of kannada, i would have still agreed even though I don't know to read Tulu.

What about city buses stopping anywhere and everywhere? Even in the RTO office there is no proper information in any language. Without asking anyone cannot do anything. It's difficult for first timers to do anything in the RTO office.

Mangalore is a self made city without any Karnataka govt support . It had its own private transport system way ahead of many other parts of karnataka ..though the karnataka govt was biased and non supportive of any kind local developmental activity in Mangalore/udupi ..All the development work happened due to central assistance in the past . Other banks and hotels were established due to the hardworking and enterprising nature of the locals without any support and Aid from Karnataka govt. Now they are telling us what to display and what not to display in the boards . Mangalore needs to protect its own language and culture and should not allow any majoritarian aspects from other parts of karnataka ruin its own individuality. The govt can try to impress the linguistic extremists of BAngalore ,Mysore,Mandya through Kannada imposition.

Mere displaying boards in kannada wont serve any purpose. Public problems be solved. Standing on footpaths, talking loudly on mobile phones, loud horns, stopping buses other than bus stops to pick up passengers should be stopped . Instead why you are worried on unimportant matters like this.

What about lowering the footboard which was planned by the RTO for all city buses only a few 1% adhered to the rule, but most of them continued with the high footboard. Inconvenience to elderly and children travelling by these killer city buses.

I think your are wrong. There is lipi in Tulu ..Konkani is a north Indian dialect and is a language of migrants from north especially from Kahmir due to invasion of Islam.

Oh please! What do you mean by "these kannadigas". Don't leave logic outside while giving opinions. Being a kannadiga myself, but fluent in tulu..i feel you should keep the numbers only in English. As not many know to read kannada. And regarding Tulu, the genius telling we should put Tulu number plate himself won't know the lipi of Tulu as it wasn't thought in schools, colleges previously. And one more thing is this being tulunad is also home to bearys, konkani, havyaks and other languages as well.

I think these peoples does not have anything else other than this. Undivided DK People can read English better comparatively other districts. Nameplates were in English since 30- to 40 years even though that time literacy rate was lesser than present rate. Most of the government officers are from other districts; so their mother tongue is Kannada but in Dakshina Kannada mother tongue is TULU.
