Ebola outbreak in DR Congo remains serious, Africa CDC says

Dakar, Sep 18: The ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo remains serious, with data pointing to gaps in infection prevention and control measures, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said on Thursday.

Congo Health Minister Samuel Roger Kamba had said on Saturday that there were “encouraging signs” in the fight against Ebola following the peak reached in mid-August. He said transmission had been gradually slowing.

However, Africa CDC Director-General Jean Kaseya said the outbreak was not yet under control.

Data from Africa CDC showed a slight decline in cases during the two weeks preceding the latest assessment. Despite the decrease, Kaseya stressed that the situation remained serious and that continued efforts were needed to contain transmission.

Health authorities are continuing to monitor the outbreak and strengthen infection prevention and control measures.
