Mangaluru: Customs seize 2.15 kg gold worth Rs 1.9 crore from two Sharjah returnees

Mangaluru, Jan 15: Customs officials at Mangaluru International Airport seized 2.154 kg of gold worth Rs 1.09 crore from two Kasargod residents who arrived on a flight from Sharjah.

Based on intelligence and profiling of passengers, Customs intercepted Faizal Thotty Melparamba (37) and Mohammad Shuhaib Mugu (31) natives of Kasargod, Kerala. The duo had arrived from Sharjah by Air India flight IX 1384 on Thursday, January 14. When the officials checked the accused they found gold concealed in paste form in underwear.

Over 2.154 kg of gold of 24K purity worth Rs 1.09 crore was recovered and seized.

Commissioner of Customs, Imamuddin Ahmed, IRS and joint commissioner Joannes George, IRS congratulated the officers of Mangaluru airport customs team lead by Praveen Kandi IRS, deputy commissioner, and officers Shrikanth K, superintendent, Subhendu Ranjan Behera, superintendent, Naveen Kumar, superintendent and others for their vigilant action in preventing the smuggling activities.

    These people who are caught are actually carriers who are carrying them for a free air ticket and a meagre amount as carrying fees. the actual smugglers are never caught.

    ... gold smugglers who are caught should be fed inside the x-ray scanning machine to get exposed to harmful radiation as a punishment to deter others from smuggling !!!
