Mangaluru: Newlyweds Priya, Rayan Fernandes killed in accident at Thokkottu bridge

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SHP)

Mangaluru, Oct 27: In a tragic incident that took place on Tuesday on Thokkottu overbridge, a lorry collided with a bike.

The accident caused the death of the woman and the man who were on the bike.

The deceased have been identified as Priya Fernandes (26) and the bike rider has been identified as her husband Rayan Fernandes (26). The couple were residents of Bajal and had recently married. They were staying at a rented house in Bangera Lane, Ullal. They had got married earlier in February this year. While Rayan was working as an accountant at Father Muller hospital, his wife Priya was employed as a clerk at the same hospital.

The accident took place when the lorry was coming via Thokkottu flyover. It hit the bike which was taking a turn to head towards Ullal. As per reports, the lorry ran over the couple and dragged them for a few meters before finally coming to a stop. While Priya died on the spot, Rayan passed away on the way to the hospital.

As per reports, the incident took place when the couple was on their way back home from work at Father Muller hospital.

Local people express anguish over unscientific curve

Accidents are occurring almost every day near Thokkottu flyover. As the way to Ullal is at a spot where the flyover ends, the point is accident-prone. News concerning the apprehensions over the curve had surfaced a week ago after a bus and a lorry met with an accident.

In this recent case, the newly married couple also got killed at the spot. The locals who gathered at the spot were furious at the unscientific design of the curve and slammed the police officials. There are allegations that the police personnel who are present on the flyover and indulged in collecting fines do not try to control the speed of the vehicles.

Any of the roads or bridges build by the GOVT or Contractor Engineers are very pathetic and unscientific manner ! If you see MODUBIDRI and B C Road highway you can see the reality. That curves and clarity is a nightmare to driver any even experienced driver. People should protest before something happen not that somebody scarified their life for the mistake GOVT authorities and their EGO

In our country there is no value for human life.
Human are less valued than cat, and rat! main reason for this is we have not controlled our population.
So big vehicle not care small vehicle, and pedestrian in road.

If roads are designed and managed by non qualified personnel and no qualified risk manager ,there is no point in blaming police ,Do we have a risk management team in police ,if it was there they could have objected the curve even after one or two accidents, Presently it claimed that daily people die at that spot or bad accidents.

The engineers struggle with designing footpaths what will they construct flyovers and overbridges. The Government should into this particular problem and rectify the issue. I would say that the heavy vechiles should be on the left side of the road and not on inner lanes which should be for two wheeler and four wheelers only.

Vehicles from different states / districts will not be aware of this kinda crossing road ( Right turn at end of flyover ). So, the traffic police is must to control the mess traffic over there also the barricade should be placed to control the speed of vehicles approaching from the flyover or crossing road should be closed at the end of flyover.

May their souls rest in peace. Speaking of the fly over curve, it has been a matter of concern as it poses danger because of barging in vehicles on the highway. People have staged protest so many times but no one to heed it. Hopefully this tragic incident open the eyes of concerned authorities and let them take necessary precautions to avoid and ensure future mishaps.

We have seen the stage of construction of this fly over and had a doubt over the brainless design of the road at over bridge from the highway 66. Instead of taking the highway in subway towards low level Kapikad and keeping the original crossing to over bridge.

Highway is meant for keeping certain speed limit, expecting the traffic of highway to stop for crossing of local traffic is a foolish thought.

What type of idiots we have designing such stupid intersection/cross road. Several times I had narrow escape at the very spot. Concerned authorities were irresponsible and are indirectly guilty of these deaths. Where did they get their training to come up with a crazy idea to give a cross road where any driver would be totally confused. Surely MLA Khadar knows about the controversy of providing such an intersection and he failed to convince the authorities not to have the crossroad as it is now.
