Udupi: Vasudeva Maiya names abettors in six-page suicide note

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Jul 8: Vasudeva Maiya, former chief executive officer of Sri Guru Raghavendra Cooperative Bank, Basavanagudi, Bengaluru, who has been accused of embezzling funds to the tune of Rs 1,400 crore, has left behind a six-page death note in which he has named several persons who he has said, are responsible for his decision to end his life. Deputy commissioner of police (south), Rohini Katoch Sepat, said that the said death note was found in the same car in which Maiya's body was found. She said that the death note was taken into possession in the presence of his family members, and that abetment to suicide case has been registered based on the names mentioned in the death note.

Vasudeva Maiya

Maiya said in the letter that Raghunath, Reddy Brothers, S H Mines (Satyanarayan), Rajath,Kumaresh, Tallam, Ravi Aithal, Rakesh and current chief executive officer of the bank were responsible for forcing him to take decision to commit suicide. In the first information report filed in Subrahmanyapura police station, 11 names have been mentioned.

It is alleged that Raghunath, a producer of movies, had raised loan of Rs 100 crore. Jaswanth Reddy reportedly took Rs 48 crore. Another entrepreneur too reportedly took away crores of rupees but failed to return the money, Vasudeva Maiya has alleged. Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is already conducting investigation into Rs 1,400 crore fraud in the said bank. An officer said that the suicide case also will be transferred to the CID.

"I should not have got involved with lending with an eye on high interest. It was my undoing. I have been cheated by the society and people. I have not cheated anyone. But it was wrong on my part to lend for interest. People who took away money from me enjoyed and defrauded me. About 15 people are to return Rs 30 to 40 crore to me. Likewise, I am liable to return money to a few people," Maiya stated. This was revealed by police sources.

It is learnt that loans were given to people solely depending on personal acquaintance without collecting papers or documents, just like private financiers. It is apparent that the loans were given with the faith that the borrowers will return the money, and with an eye on earning interest. Depositors money was used to make benefit without securing them with security, sources stated.

Read news item again ( part of it quoted below, a dying person, is unlikely to lie)....if he was a CROOK he would not have committed suicide ...he would have bought a ticket to London with his ill gotten money and lived peacefully like Mallya...or was lurking in front of Karnataka High Court to get anticipatory bail....

Is it just Mallya? This guy too is solely responsible for all depositors money. Dont they know collaterals are basic necessity while issuing a loan? This is a big loss/hit to hard earned money of people. irrespective of occupation, background rules are for all. unfortunately, after following all rules, normal people are penalised

How can a responsible person lend 100s of crores of public money to his friends w/o collateral unless otherwise to pocket the heavy commission, & now put the blame on them!

In this case depositors stand to lose their savings!

This is a small fish. This about Dhoot brothers of Videocon who have taken money from ICICI Bank and SBI without any collateral and even not being arrested. That is the power of big fish and being close to ruling.

Will the chairman of SBI and ICICI will do suicide. They will not because their term is fixed and they can get their fat pay cheques with settlements and get a Govt directorship without any worries. Central govt and RBI will refinance the banks of 40000 crores or more and the case will be closed.

As Co-operative banks do not come under RBI or refinancing they are in bad shape. PMC bank is the best example of this.

Hope there may also skeletons in Mangalore co-operative sector but not exposed so far

Vasudeva's suicide note is not going to help anyone as he had mentioned borrowers names in the said note for his own failure of not securing loans with proper securities.
It is also wrong on the part of the police to register cases against the borrowers just because of the fact that they took loan from him . If it amounts to suicide then many borrowers would have been in the jail today. Just taking loan from a person without replaying it doesnt amount to abetment to suicide.

I feel sad for Vasudeya but blaming others for his failure is not right. Also registering abetment to suicide cases against people named in the suicide note shows the ignorance of law on the part of police.

In any finance deal there is no place for trust.

The person responsible should have proper documentation and required security according to rules.

The borrower may not repay because his business condition is bad even though he is trustworthy. So safe thing is follow rules while lending as public money is involved.

Being CEO of the bank which is entrusted with public money how did he lend the money to borrowers on personal acquaintance without any collatteral guarantees. If it was his own money will he give such huge loans without any guarantee.....now poor depositors will have to suffer and sing lala....lala....lala...lala.....!!!

You are singing the same song. People know India lost 1962 China war and 43,000 sq km land. That is the history now. Further to that India fought 1967 war and won and that is also the history. Does this covers the failures of present government?

Since 1962 Country built the strong military with modern fighting capabilities. You cannot fail now and tell the people that we have failed earlier. Only the losers use this trick. Winners always consider the earlier defeat as lesson and move forward.
