Sullia, Jun 27: A lady from Bengaluru, duly holding a copy of an order passed by Karnataka State Women's Commission, is sitting on dharna in front of the house of a youth from here since Friday June 26. She claims that the youth had married her three years back. The woman has been demanding to be admitted into the family.

The family members in the meantime, dismissed her claim of marriage and left for an undisclosed destination by locking their house. The woman in question, Shanthi alias Asiya from Bengaluru, has been insisting that she had married Ibrahim Khaleel from Kattekkar three years ago.

The lady had filed a complaint with the woman's commission on June 22, duly saying that she had converted into Islam at the behest of Ibrahim Khaleel for facilitating the marriage which was solemnised on July 12, 2017. She says that she lived with her husband without any problem till January 15 this year, after which Khaleel returned to Sullia and cut off contact with her. She had asked the commission to allow her to join her husband's family at Sullia as the family of her husband has been supporting Khaleel and she had lost financial and family support.

On the basis of her representation, the commission had asked the deputy director of the women and child welfare department to take steps to see that she is allowed to live with her husband's family. A report was also sought from the official within 15 days as per the order dated June 24. By the time the Sullia child development programme officer and Sullia police sub-inspector reached the house in question along with Asiya on June 25, the family members had gone away by locking their house. The police then summoned Khaleel and his family members and obtained a statement as per which Khaleel said that he had neither married her nor had any relationship. Asiya told the police that she will continue to remain here till she is admitted into the house.

Three police personnel have been deployed around the house where Asiya is sitting in protest for security.

It is learnt that Asiya had visited the police station here two weeks back. The police had asked the family of Khaleel to come to the station but Khaleel said he did not have anything to do with the woman. The lady has returned again to assert her right. The police said that she has not been presenting documents to prove her marriage and that she did not file an official complaint as per their suggestion.
