Mangaluru: New Gurpur bridge ready for vehicular movement

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SHP)

Mangaluru, Jun 5: The ambitious Gurpur bridge built across the Phalguni river on Mangaluru-Moodbidri-Karkala, NH 169 which was under construction, is finally completed and is ready for vehicular movement. Meanwhile, the photographs of the newly constructed bridge have gone viral on social media. The bridge work was slated to finish by February. However, due to some technical and land acquisition issues, the work got delayed.

Back in February 2019, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel was the one who had laid the foundation stone for the project. The estimated time for the completion of the project was supposed to be around two years. But, Kateel had assured of completing the project within one year. The initial cost of the construction of the bridge was around Rs 39.4 crore. However, it is still unclear whether the delay of a few months has shot up the cost.

The decision for the construction of the new Gurupur bridge was made after the original bridge built in the year 1923, was found in a dilapidated state. Considering the dangerous situation it posed, a decision to build a more sturdy bridge was taken.

The bridge connects with Karkala and is situated 17 km away from Mangaluru and generally witnesses heavy vehicular movement.

    Regarding naming of Bridge...
Bridge meaning is ' To bring near ' or ' Close the Distance '...
But Alas ! 🤣Here Naming the Bridge only has ' Created a Gap ' resulting in ' Further Distancing ' !
Better leave it to the Locals !
Half of India is in any case named after 1 2 or 3 personalities who have led colourful lufe openly.

Don't think of naming a bridge in memory late Pejavar Swamiji instead think of naming a institution of eminence, learning etc in his memory. Swamiji was a much taller and respected personality than a ordinary bridge..

The bridge is built with poor planing..from photos we can clearly see there is no extra space in case of emergency accident n all. If a vehicle breakdown in the middle of the bridge all the road will be blocked. Where is d future planning in construction, since we need 4 ways bridge at least after 10 years if not now.
    Anyway congrats to all concerned.

Good observation Sir jee... there should have been enough space to set up a garage and couple of tea stalls in the middle of bridge so that people can spend their time until the broken vehicle is moved out.

Appreciate the speedy work progress and completion of Gurpur bridge, which was much needed for traffic. BUT, there are talks(?) of converting this route (Karkala-Moodbidri-Mangalore) into 4 lane road (plz contact Kateel Kumar to know year of completion of this project), then why bridge has been constructed with only 2 lanes?
Any such bridge projects should be planned by keeping at least 50 years of use in mind & this road is becoming busy road day by day.

If it is to be constructed 50 years in plan it would have taken another 5to 7 years for all land acquisition and other work. Try to enjoy what is there. Compare to old one thus is more wider. And in an emergency any vehicle can be moved as there is ample space. Ppl lije you complain even for 4 or 6 lanes stating in case of major accident all the lanes will be blocked etc etc
    Ollada gandanige mosralli kallu
All ppl blamed Kateel for delay for fly over but same ppl r not ready to congratulate him for the earlyconstruction

If new Gurpur bridge construction cost Rs 39.4 crore, then why did pump well flyover has taken whooping Rs 660 crores and more than 10 years to complete?

The British built bridge is still serving since 1923. Hope this bridge will not start cracking like pump well.

1.Is this two lane bridge is sufficient to handle the capsule tanker with increasing vehicle movement?
    2. Why there are no hard shoulders as per the requirement of the International Highway construction requirement.
    3. Why there are no reflector or lighting for night traffic movement?

This bridge is designed and built as per Indian standards that too as per standards set by present goberment. Therefore international highway standards will not apply. Instead if road reflectors you may soon see the colourful flags flying right, left and center to mark the lane. We need to accept what is served in the plate with no questions. Just clap...clap....and sing lala....lala...lala...!. Anyway let us wish safe crossing over the bridge for all.....!!!!!

I should say my heartfelt thanks to all concerned. I am also one of the witnesses who faced much trouble during the frequent jams over old bridge there.

Two times I have put my concern here in this forum. I was unhappy about the previous leader Veerappa Moily's attitude as he even after becoming Chief Minister as well as central positions not showed any concern about this urgent problem as he himself traveled on the same route since decades.

Anyway we got a chance to see smile in peoples faces even though I am not traveling now there. Finishing of the bridge within an year is an example of determination. Hope those who trolled Nalin for the delay of Pump Well flyover may appreciate the work here.

What happened to another collapsed bridge on the same river little away ? Let somebody throw light on that.

Congratulations to all the people involved in the construction of this bridge. My main worry is this bridge should not pose bottle neck when there is heavy traffic and accidents as it is only two lane. Secondly there is bottleneck in temple town of Gurpur. The authorities co cerned should plan how this could be solved,

Good news. Hope that the completion of project is done without compromising the quality of construction compared to other bridges which start cracking within few months of grand inauguration.
Now we should not waste time in naming ceremony. Give some bird name so that no controversy; otherwise time is wasted naming and renaming. Hope this bridge give service to the mankind for more than 97 years !
