Mangaluru: Social activist Gerard Towers files complaint against forest officials over death of gaur

Daijiworld Media Network -Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru, May 6: Social activist Gerard Towers on Wednesday, May 6, filed a case against the Forest department and its officers at Barke police station alleging negligence that led to the death of a male gaur which wandered into Mangaluru city on Tuesday.

It may be recalled, on Tuesday morning, a male gaur was found near Kudroli area causing panic among the residents. A rescue operation was later conducted by the forest officials where they fired darts to tranquilise the animal.

During its rehabilitation at Charmadi forest, it is said that gaur collapsed and died. Reacting to the incident, social worker Gerard Towers accused the forest officers of negligence and for the fate of the deceased animal. He has also filed a complaint against the responsible officials at Barke police station.

Gerard claimed that the forest officials handled the situation in a completely unscientific manner which caused fatal injuries on the animal's body. He also pointed out that this was not an isolated incident and that the forest officers were known to handle animals recklessly.

Speaking to Daijiworld, social activist Gerard Towers said, "To this day, the forest officials have displayed a 50 per cent rate of failure when it comes to taming of wild animals let loose in the city. When an animal enters the city, before alerting the concerned authorities, people begin pelting stones at it and end up injuring 25 per cent of the animal. Then the concerned authorities (forest officials) result in hurting over 50 per cent of the animal due to which it dies. The forest officers are trained to handle these situations. However, they have constantly failed at the same. Regarding the incident that took place on Tuesday, the gaur suffered the blow of darts twice. The manner in which it was tied at the legs and loaded on to the vehicle was disturbing. It was an unscientific way of handling the animal and the injuries seen on its body said it all. In the complaint filed, I have requested for the post-mortem report of the deceased animal and urged for the investigation on the case to be presented before media and public.

"The gaur has died due to the negligence of the forest officers and I am intently waiting for the investigation report. I am fighting for the sake of the people and I believe in raising my voice when I sense there is injustice prevailing," he said.

I feel all those wild life conservation posts in Mangalore should be removed.
Whenever need arises we can get man power from near KSRTC bus stand and pay them daily wages to catch the animals.
The chances remain the same. They will capture the animal alive or dead!!

Your statement - "I bet the Vet who gave Tranquilizer.... is a RESERVATION candidate..." is demeaning of poor reservation candidates. They have seen the difficult life and are much human than anybody else.

There is a need to remove such moronic mindset from the people like you. We have got independence 73 years ago but it is strange that such thinking of Class still remains. I feel you lack required education.

    Shankar,

Trust me, this 'Reservation' is a curse on India...It was originally entered for first 10 years, by BR Ambedkar , when he wrote the constitution...he was saying ...in next 10 years all 'Backwards' will educate themselves and become like himself and all will be equal..like rest of the world...in next 10 years...

After 10 years, politicians thought there are more backwards in numbers , so to get their votes ....lets extend it forever....

Trust me there is no reservation on caste anywhere in the world....except our dear INDIA...that's why we are still a third world country .

I don't mind these backward classes given scholarships, if needed more training in class rooms...Breakfast, Lunch ,Dinner and Bed if needed...but their exams and College admissions and job selection should be like others...then only India will prosper...

This DMBangera, Mangalore/Mumbai , is he willing to get his heart surgery done by a 'Reservation Surgeon' of course not...these are his EMPTY words...Probably he is not even a backward...guy with Banjibane....

    ...Tak...Takk...

For your information the Veterinary doctor who gave tranquilizer two times to the Bison is Dr. Vishnu and is not areservation candidate. There are only good doctors or bad doctors. Sick mind in you think that all bad doctors are from Reserved category. Have you read the news of rickshaw puller's daughter topping IAS. Intelligence is also not based on whether you belong to elite class or poor reserved category.

We have so many options in food... Still we cut the animals and eat... Human beings are not at all satisfied creatures on this earth... It came somehow.. lost his way.....Here no one snatched the migrant workers food to feed that poor animal.... There are instances at some places migrant workers were throwing food packets and water too... Do you think animals are selfish like human beings?

Please do not get blinded by fake WhatsApp messages. Nothing has changed but it has become worst than before. Before we used to see development including roads, but now some of the roads are dug and nobody is interested to repair it.

Suraj, what you said was nonsense. Mr. Towers is an social activist and not trained to catch wild animals. It is the duty of paid trainers to catch the animal and release it without hurting. It is easy to kill wild animals but the question is why we have to pay salary to trained forest officials, if they can not perform their duty efficiently. This is not the first time the captured animal was died in captivity, but several times it happened out of sheer negligence. That is why Mr. Towers has filed a complaint. You should appreciate it.
