2,500 Indian workers including 500 from Mangaluru working for oil firm stranded in Saudi Arabia

Daijiworld Media Network - Al Jubail (ANK)

Al Jubail, Apr 15: As many as 2,500 workers from India among which 500 are from Mangaluru are stranded in Saudi Arabia. They were visiting the country on a temporary visa through a company named Expertise Contracting Co Ltd, an Indo-Saudi joint venture engaged in plant maintenance and turnaround business in oil, gas and petrochemical field in Saudi Arabia.

The company had employed over 8,000 workers from different corners of the world and the majority of them being from India. The nature of the business was such that they hired workers on short term visiting visas and demobilize them by April as the business grows dull after summer sets in April.

The disruption of flights caused due to the global outbreak of COVID-19 has made it difficult for Saudi Arabia to demobilize workers who are on visiting visa.

The Indian workers are now expecting to visit India on emergency grounds such as medical assistance for protracted illnesses like diabetes and hypertension, and to attend ailing parents.

The company has sought permission of the Saudi government to send Indian workers in a chartered flight, which the government has approved. The company has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, chief minister of Karnataka B S Yediyurappa, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to seek the permission of Indian government to land the chartered flight carrying these workers. The company is currently waiting for consent from the Indian government.

The company is also ready to undertake all the necessary preventive measures required for allowing the stranded Indian workers to return. This would involve conducting COVID-19 tests of the workers and furnishing negative report certificates. However, the certificate is generated not earlier than 48 hours before the date of boarding.

The company also agreed to take steps to quarantine these workers in India as per Indian government norms in areas that shall be identified beforehand. The Saudi company also agreed to bear the necessary expenses.

Many people are commenting just out their habitual comments in this forum.
Reality is these workers are stranded because of the total shut down and not due to loss of their jobs who are bound to return once their contracts are over.
Many of them have done such trips earlier, and God willing will also do in the future to the same country on similar terms as time permits.

Even countries like USA have a guest workers Visa program that allows many South American farm hands to work in vineyards, farms etc. for couple of months in the US and return once the contract is over, and the same workers are also taking this opportunity to return to US as and when they have an opportunity.

The fact is the Indian side is not working on returning NRIs who are facing uncertainty, loss of income, no unemployment or retirement benefits in the host countries, especially from GCC at this juncture.

Chances are India GCC relations will be affected if the Indian side will not act in time.

    Dear Evans and Manu,

I am just reading your comments on the workers stranded here. I am working here, Yanbu the second industrial belt of Saudi. For your information, these people are came on temporary contracts to complete the shutdown. As said in the article, the sponsor company is ready to bear all the expenses. There are several such companies here in KSA and people earn good amount of money in 4-5 trips in a year. Please do not make unnessary comments, without knowing ground reality.

It is a sad state of affairs that these workers who were hired by an oil firm in Saudi Arabia are stranded are waiting to return to India due to non availability of work. The company who hired them are responsible for their return journey. It is not the responsible of the Indian government to bare their expenses for their return to India. There are so many such people who are sailing in the same boat. God only should help them as they have families to take care.

The Supreme Court of India on delivered the verdict pushing the overseas workers under the bus saying 'Stay where you are'.

Now these work force who bring Billions in remittance to India and help them fund during the elections are made 'Die where you are'.

The Supreme Court of India, made easy for the central government to escape with the responsibility.
The Embassies which charges every overseas Indian for services today is speechless.

The condition of the overseas workers are far worst than migrant workers. For migrant worker at least they house if they go back to villages. But overseas workers are at the 'Mercy of God'.

Your concern is right; but considering the humongous amounts of Indians trapped around the world, it would be a Herculean task to take care of them when the situation in the country itself is beyond control & authorities are straggling to contain corona!

Sir, Whatever may be the number of Indians working abroad, the Embassies should ask the Diplomats to reach to the people in distress. It is the Ministry of External Affairs to make sure the Indians don't suffer when there no food and money.
Why only numbers are matter during the distress, why the numbers count during elctions?

Saudi's have exploited these innocent guys, and now dumping them en masse to get clear of all problems like taking care of them etc.; these workers need to be paid a severance bonus to take care of their daily expenses!!
Considering the strict quarantine protocol for foreign travellers, it would be a Herculean task to quarantine so many of them at a time! BTW, similar cases of 1000s of layoffs r being reported from various other gulf countries!

    Mannu,

Do you know how many Israelis left India by chartered flights paying from their own pockets recently??
This Saudi company has taken good care of the workers as per the contract, and repatriating them at the end of contract at their own cost.

What is your problem with that???

Sending back people for saudi company is not at all a herculean task. Do you know how many barrels they remove crude oil daily and it's revenue. After all major oil companies owned by the government. When no work..they throw back people to there country. At least look after them for two month's period during crises..after ten days ramdhan starts. Why in hurry. Is it india ready for it.

The price of oil has come down so much that they may be hardly getting any profits after deducting production costs! BTW, if I'm not mistaken, Saudi Aramco reported a loss for the first time in history! The situation is bound to worsen further for these oil producing countries! With lowest demand, Opec - Russia rift, threat of e-vehichles etc.! This CORONA will be the biggest game changer of our times!!

Ann, how are you so sure that the middleman has not taken money from them; crook agents know how to exploit those desperate for job abroad without the recruiting co. knowing it!
Moreover, in such an unprecedented situation, a large group of people suddenly rushing home would make the already overburdened situation to break down! Moreover, 1000s of laid off employees in other gulf countries too r waiting to return back!!
