Mangaluru, Jul 31: The 2nd additional district and sessions (special) court in Mangaluru has delivered a significant verdict in a 2018 gang-rape case, sentencing four convicts to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposing a total fine of Rs 74,000 on them.
The convicts have been identified as Prajwal (33), Arun Amin (34), Aditya Salian (28), and Abdul Riyaz (40).
The horrific incident took place on November 18, 2018, when a young woman had gone to a beach with her male friend. A group of seven individuals, including three minors, cornered and gang-raped the survivor. A case was subsequently registered at the Mangaluru women's police station.
The case was thoroughly investigated by the then police inspector Kalavathi K and the then ACP Manjunath Shetty. Later, the then ACP Srinivasa Gowda R filed the chargesheet before the court.
After conducting the trial and examining the evidence, judge Jagadeesha V N concluded that the charges against the accused were proven beyond a reasonable doubt. The court then pronounced the verdict, awarding 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine to the four adult convicts.
Public prosecutor Jyothi Pramod Nayak examined the witnesses and argued on behalf of the prosecution.
Meanwhile, the trial against the three minor boys involved in the heinous crime is currently underway before the Juvenile Justice Board.
