Udupi, Mar 25: To effectively rein in the carnage and financial crisis let loose by coronavirus, the country is going through a three-week lockdown with effect from Tuesday midnight. This is the litmus test for the resolve and patience of the people and how they handle the situation is likely to decide the immediate future of the country.

Passengers, migrant labourers, daily wage workers etc have no money to meet the daily expenses as businesses and industries are either closed down or partially functioning. Taking note of their plight, relief unit of Jamaat-e-Islamic Hind and members of the Sarvajaneka Ganeshstova Committee, Kadiyali have taken up the initiative to satiate the hunger of people living by the roadsides and those who are in dire need of food every day.

Jamaat-e-Islamic Hind unit as of now has decided to help the needy till March 31. If necessary, food will also be provided to people who are dependent on daily wage, with help from donors, said convener of the district unit, Hassan Kodibengre, speaking to Daijiworld.

The relief unit has been extending various services all over Karnataka. The district units function under the directions of the state unit. About 600 youngsters are in the core committee, and many have joined hands with them in the form of volunteers.

Everyone who is over 18 can join hands with the initiatives of the unit. The district relief unit has been serving the needy like fruits hidden behind the leaves without craving for publicity and without getting confined by caste and religious limits. The unit provided food for about 45 people who could be located in the city.

The families of volunteers have joined hands with them in the task. A person has been appointed for cooking. The system of food distribution is being executed with the help of the police. Hassan Kodibengre says that this is a little help from them towards the giant task taken up by the government.

As of now, volunteers are meeting expenses on their own. Hassan feels that they can help more people if donors come forward to support this initiative.

Meanwhile, members of the Sarvajaneka Ganeshstova Committee, Kadiyali, voluntarily have come forward to help the needy people of the temple town during the nationwide lockdown for 21 days.

Speaking to the media Raghavendra Kini said, “Today is Chandramana Ugadi and our Prime Minister has called for entire India lockdown for 21 days to contain Coronavirus pandemic. But there are many daily wage and needy people who cannot get a meal a day due to lockdown. So our Committee will be distributing meals to people who are in need of food. No one in Udupi should be hungry due to lockdown. I request all the people in Udupi to join hands and help these people.”

Every day afternoon, meal will be arranged by the Committee and food packets will be distributed in four different routes from March 26, he said.

Kini has also given a call to citizens of the Udupi district to recognize at least 5 people in the neighborhood and distribute a part of food to them with proper social distancing and taking proper measures.
For this purpose, we are setting up separate kitchen. Volunteers help in cutting vegetables, preparing the food and to clean the vessels. Everything will be done in shift wise and all norms of cleanliness will be followed as instructed by the district administration, he added.

Kitchen will be looked after by Manjunath Hebbar, with the help of Asare Charitable Trust, Kadiyali, and all arrangements will be managed by Ragravendra Kini, general Secretary, Sarvajaneka Ganeshosva Committee, Kadiyali.
