PM Modi announces nation wide lockdown for 21 days, starting tonight

New Delhi, Mar 24 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced nationwide three weeks lockdown starting from Tuesday midnight. All states and union territories will come under its purview.

He said this is an essential step to fight coronavirus decisively. He added that saving lives is priority as of now.

"With folded hands, I request you to stay put wherever you are," said Prime Minister Modi. He added that he is mindful of the economic ramifications of it. However, this is a smaller concern.

PM Modi warned, if we don't follow a complete lockdown for the coming 21 days, the nation will go back 21 years and many families will be devastated.

He also said many powerful countries in the world have become helpless, regardless of their efforts. He once again reiterated that social distancing is the only way to deal with this deadly coronavirus that has infected more than 500 in India, so far.

"Some people are under the misconception that social distancing is only for those infected with coronavirus... but they should understand that this for everyone because it is important to break the cycle," said PM Modi in his address to the nation.

"Covid-19 took 67 days to spread to one lakh people. To reach two lakh people, it took 11 days.

"But it took only four days to reach another lakh taking the total spread to three lakh," Modi said pointing out the study by the World Health Organisation (WHO) on the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic globally.
The Prime Minister said that when the coronavirus starts spreading, then it is "very tough" to stop.

"This is the reason why China, US, France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Iran and other countries where the Covid-19 spread, the situation went out of control," he said.

He said that experts say that if today any person has been infected with Covid-19, then it will take some days to show its symptom.

"The man with the Covid-19 then transmits that to number of other people. And according to the WHO reports, due to this pandemic, one person can transmit the disease to hundreds of people as it spreads like fire," Modi said.

Pointing out the better medical facilities in western countries, he said: "Remember that the health sector and health facilities in Italy and US are the best in the world and they are considered the best. Despite that they were unable to stop the spread of Covid-19. In this situation, there is no way to stop it."

Modi further highlighted that the only way to stop the spread of Covid-19 is the example of the countries who dealt with it and are now coming back on the track.

"Only those countries whose people followed the government orders, did not go out of their homes are coming out of it," he said, adding that thus we should also assume that the only option in front of us it that we not go out of the home.

This is his second address to the nation regarding coronavirus. In his first address he urged Indians to observe 'Janata Curfew'.

I like the precautionary actions taken by my village panchayat team (President, Members, including officals with the support of Varthakara Sangha), complete lock down of the village for 1 week & for any , this decision was taken prior to our PM's entire nation lockdown.

Few simple precautionary measures with immediate effect for 7 days
    (1) Closure of all shops (not limited to Pharmacy & Hospitals)
    (2) Created a team (blockwise) to support the village members
    (3) Requested everyone to call Panchayat office in case of any requirement of urgent commodities
    (4) Selected team (blockwise) to co-ordinate with the shops & deliver the commodities

in my opinion this is one of the best step by the Panchayat team has taken to minimize the panic situation,

The educated and well informed did not buy this and taught Congress a good lesson. They were booted out of every state , pathetic performance in 2019 to such an extent that their leader had to flee down south kerala wayanad to win on muslim votes. Do you still want the 15 lacs, ? But think about the numerous daily wage earners. What provisions as the government done for them. Have you thought about them. These are the same people who elected him to power .

Considering India's huge population, I would say India need to change handling this pandemic immediately..
    1. Separate healthy population from affected people.
    2. First give medicines, tablets to infected people. Do not run test at this stage. If patient recovers then test his samples to certify that he is negative and quarantine them.

Idea is to reduce testing load, and separate healthy people from unhealthy people...

There is no point in declaring test results at the end of each day. It gives psychological pressure for many...

Government need to deal this pandemic in better way.

Readers are requested to read about variolation (inoculation) before invention of smallpox vaccine of Edward Jenner. Variolation is pricking the boil of a smallpox patient and introduction of the same needle in the skin of a healthy individual. It reduced the mortality of smallpox by 90% and most of the Royal families of Europe and Russia got it done.In London the mortality which was more than 80% came down to less than 10 %.It was invented in India or some East Asian country and carried to Europe via Istanbul, this was long before Jenner invented the small pox vaccine. What I mean to say is that immunity is important and in case of Corona, pricks are not required as it is airborne, let there be exposure and let people develop immunity. The mortality rate of Corona (4%) is much less than smallpox, every life is prescious but more people dying because of lack of immunity because of lockdown is much worse than few people dying. It is a contrarian view but facts are facts.Panic should stop, if we are happy our body produces endorphins which boost immunity. So I always say Be Happy Be Healthy.

I do agree with you about the social distance and even the lock down but not withe words that our PM said. The news clearly states "He added that he is mindful of the economic ramifications of it. However, this is a SMALLER CONCERN"Is this really smaller concern, yes might be very small for him and other politicians as well as for rich ones, not for those people who depend on daily wages. As you know in Western countries, the governments have announced economic stimulus packages including unemployment benefits who lost jobs (In Australia even for those temporary visa holders who are not otherwise eligible). What is Indian government doing for those people, just clapping from the rooftop or asking the landlords to waive the rent?? (In Australia, government waived rent for tenants but also freeze the mortgage (home loan payment)for the landlords) I am aware of the some state governments are distributing free rice which is commendable.

The other thing is "if we don't follow a complete lockdown for the coming 21 days, the nation will go back 21 years " Don't you think after coming power, he already did that. 21 years ago a Dollar was not 76 Rupees but now it is. He might need to go another world tour to ask donations even to announce a stimulus package for poor, jobless, small businesses ( I mean not announcing like 15 lacs) I am sorry, I am not doing politics but when all countries were having effect of didn't we see the writing on the wall, why all these strict measurement took this long time? If they put all the NRIs returning as well visitors in isolation directly from the airport, this could have been controlled better.

Lastly, He said "Remember that the health sector and health facilities in Italy and US are the best in the world and they are considered the best." Didn't he claimed we are the best in the world during elections and even ridiculed Italy for his own political benefit and his bhakths claimed Cow dung and Cow urine can cure everything??

Why PM has to announce this 'lockdown for 21 days' you people shown your real knowledge about social distancing on the day of Janata Curfew. He clearly said you all show respect to Hospital people by clapping your hands from your own premises, when at 5pm you all got down to the streets how many highly educated people involved in this Modi Jai Jai, BJP Jai Jai?. If you all shown your intelligence on that day, he would have only said Social Distancing is enough for our people to slow down the spread of this COVID-19.
PM realized we don't have much difference between highly educated, educated and uneducated. Our brain works equally at all levels. Now because of some people everybody has to suffer. My heart goes to those poor daily wagers and their children. God for whose sins who is suffering.
My humble request to all of you who can help them specially to their small children please do so. else they may die of hunger and not because of the devil Corona Virus.

My appeal is for the police to be compassionate in these 21 days. TV channels were repeatedly showing 'proud' moments of police in various parts of the country, beating violators and people loafing around - it also showed police removing the air from the tires of a cycle-rickshaw, cops ragging people to crawl on their stomachs and do sit-ups.

Yes, these rule-breakers need a stern message; however it scares the rest of us. Delivery riders are also worried about being stopped during the curfew/lock-down and hence preventing delivery of food, medicine and other countries essential items.

We are law-abiding citizens and would encourage the police chief in DK and other districts to convey a message that innocent people will not be unnecessarily harassed if we have to step out of homes to shop for groceries and essentials. Thank you for your hard work and sacrifice to keep us safe always.

Finally we woke up from self denial. If we are to believe the info on covid-19 ,it says the infected person shows the symptoms within 14 days. Going by this theory the people who are carrying the virus unknowingly right now will stop spreading it more in coming 21 days except among the people of their house. They will show visible symptoms by then and will be hospitalized under quarantine.Hope for the best.
My friend who is abroad sent me this message
Today I went to a co-op supermarket in my city { am in a country(OUTSIDE INDIA) which has partial curfew and strict social distancing)
1, Only one family member could enter inside. (the other has to wait outside sitting on chairs which are kept 2 meters apart in waiting area)
2.,Before entering a volunteer authorized by govt tested me for fever.
3 Then i have to use the sanitizer on kept on the next table to clean my hands
4 I have to pick up disposable hand gloves and wear them
5 Inside the store there are people who see to it that no two customers are closer than 2 meters at any time including at the line at billing counter.
6 All the staff at the super market wearing mask and gloves.
All these arrangements make sure that there is no community spread of virus. The shop is full of groceries ,fresh fruits, dairy and vegetables. No panic or hurry among customers. Prices are stable .(govt has told strictly the price manipulators will be jailed and licence cancelled)
Outside during evening curfew time no one goes outside.
People are serious about the covid situation , govt is truly people friendly and functional

Good decision but need to make sure enough ration supply to poor households & daily wagers. There is great urgency to look after drinking water scarcity this summer because everybody says wash hands frequently which may lead to shortage of drinking water supply which inturn turn into people suffer from Thirst & Hunger.

Few expressed concern over ration. Don't worry, everything will be available as usual. But, for getting upto ration store it won't be easy as before. People might struggle a bit as no transport and police deployment. Still, I say Nation is bigger than ration. Nation is bigger than emotion. Follow the stipulated rules, albeit little trouble, everything will be fine.
If you see disasters conditions of Europe, you will be happy faces. Don't bring ghost from road to home. Today's struggle will be tomorrow's giggle.

I am worried, we the majority of Indians are poor, we do not have full freezers, full refrigerators and do not know about full kitchen pantry at our home, Most of we purchase food, cook & eat same day. Who is going to bring/arrange food for us. What kind of financial relief we get from this Government ? (All our money from the Bank is taken to Switzerland and our Banks are empty and we should send Prime minister & President to Switzerland to bring money back) Let us ask God Rama & Krishna to help us.

    Simple observation...
" Jaan Hai to Jahaan Hai ".
PM has simply given the order " Lock down for 21 days .
For those bothered about ration, essential commodities ,food stuffs ,etc there surely will have to be a plan in place by the State Governments.
The PMs onus was on " SURVIVAL " ...If you survive only ...will you eat right ? Simple as that !
Grants, economic packages,Corporate incentives etc etc only later...if one Survives...
The PM could not have been more clearer and serious ....

What it looks like no plan is a plan.

21days lock down perfect. Stay at home perfect. 10crore ppl in move and no home any day and anytime in India. Keeping them for max 72 hrs confined. Possible. Without any option given for food, medicine and water, they will push the drawn barriers of law. There are families of soldiers, police counted too.

Hope that state Govt take necessary measures on their own. Modi will return again and again on TV to preach. But with no contingency plan in place. A task force which was supposed to set up a week back, still to be set up. It shows laxity on part of Modi led BJP in fighting this evil.

Compliance of Government orders through social distancing is one of the major ways of survival from mass destruction. Yet many have taken it lightly not realising the consequences likely to follow. We hope along with the lockdown the Government will provide the required medical kit to the doctors and the ventilators to cope with the pandemic.

If there is a lockdown essential supplies will be affected, availability of medicines for blood pressure , diabetes and other illnesses will be affected, drivers and truckers are already complaining of harassment, how will pharma company workers go to their workplace without transport they cannot work from home.Corona has 1-3% mortality other diseases will kill many more, financial slowdown will shut many industries, joblessness will increase, so will suicides. After 21 days even if one infected person from a non lockdown country comes here the cycle will start again. You cannot shut the borders for ever and wave after wave will attack people .If people do not get nutritious food how will immunity increase. But do not despair every bacteria and virus requires a conducive environment to thrive. With summer and low humidity not we but Corona will face a lockdown.Be Happy Be Healthy.

PM's call for lockdown is obviously needed no doubt, the entire world is following it, but government must make way for essential needs, food is very important, middle class might manage somehow because normally middle class families save thier money, but labour's don't do that, they must make a system such that BPL card holders can get some amount of ration for 21 days, and for everyone they must make a time system such that people from one area can be only allowed during one period of time and similarly for another area they must allow during another period of time and so on ,Thus will make way for everyone to get their groceries without crowding all together at the same time.

It's not worry, infact what you said is correct, but it's just the need for the time being, it's very unfortunate that we live in one such country where poor people don't bother about thier future like us, I really feel sad to say this but labour's in our country ( not all) collect thier daily wages and go towards a bar or a liquor outlet nearby instead of saving it. But unfortunately for now we can't sit and debate on this topic that they are taking things for free from our government without being a tax payer or they have never saved thier Money for difficult times, if they don't get basic needs, they will come out and make things more difficult to control things.

things are happening unpredictable measures. Daily wagers how will store groceries for 1 month? Jaan he tho jahan he slogan applies if you are alive without food for 21 days. Some readers said,we need online food stuff arrangements ,home deliveries etc which is very important too. Lock down should implement but same time concern over critical areas required. People are too much worried and stored items more than needed so some people not getting enough groceries. Door to door facilitates will bring relief for one and all.

Raj sir, I am sure you mean well, but please look at this from a wider angle. It may be possible to stock 21 days of food items in places like Karkala but its certainly difficult in city living especially in flats and apartments - we would be lucky to have stock for a week. The State machinery must instill confidence for groceries to remain open - as from what I saw today not a single grocer around my street was open for business today.

Lot will happen in 21 days. India will become clean out of SARS-Cov-2 virus, which spreads Covid-19 disease.

    - All Covid-21 infected people inside India will get exposed & will be in hospital, in next 14 days.
    - As all International Sea, Land, Air, Railway has been closed, so no imported cases will come to India.
    - Because of lockdown, city to city spread will stop.
    - Any spread will be only within people inside a house & such cases will get exposed within next 14 days.

India will not get into New York or Italy kind of situation.. Never...

It is better to lockdown now, than after disease spreads as done by UK, Italy, France, Germany, South Korea, China etc...

If there were many measures introduced for the poor there would not be a mass exodus of people (daily wage labourers) fleeing from Bombay to Bihar, Patna, Gorakhpur etc. Because this Govt. is opaque and without any norms / procedures set in, they didn't want to allow these guys to leave the city. Had there be a future one wouldn't see this mass exodus. I read a news where 950 Security Companies even went to the extent of increasing the salaries of their people just to connive them to stay back, to no avail. Some employers went to the extent of warning that they would lose their jobs after their return but these guys were hell bent on leaving for their home town.
