Amid stake on sale, Air India Express registers profit of Rs 680 crore during Apr-Sept

Daijiworld Media Network – Mumbai (AM)

Mumbai, Feb 14: The low-cost subsidiary of national carrier Air India Ltd, Air India Express, has reported a net profit of Rs 679.8 crore during April-September 2019, an increase of about 26 per cent over the Rs 177.3 crore profit reported during the same period previously.

K Shyam Sundar, CEO, Air India Express, in a statement said that the airline's revenue rose 75% year-on-year to Rs 3,124.34 crore. “In this financial year, we will exceed the figure of Rs 5,000 crore in operating revenues, and this will be for the first time, since the airline’s inception,” he said.

Air India Express reported revenue of Rs 4,171.5 crore and a net profit of Rs 168.5 crore during 2018-19.

The airline said it will introduce non-stop flights on Tiruchirappalli–AbuDhabi which will operate four times a week and Tiruchirappalli–Doha which will operate thrice a week, in its 2020 summer schedule, commencing from March 28.

The centre has already begun the process for entire stake sale of Air India and Air India Express and a 50 per cent stake in Air India SATS Airport Services Private Ltd.

AI has the highest employee per Aircraft ratio in the world amongst all airlines.

Can we be sure the airline is making "Profit" ? or is this just fudged figures (Jumla - like the economy in good shape, Sab Changisi) to entice bidders for a non performing asset.

The Indian national carrier 'Air India's' Maharajah is welcoming travelers from decades with smile. But it is the government aviation policy has failed the carrier. The losses the successive governments are showing is to fund the carrier so that the politicians pockets are filled.

The total outstanding of cash-strapped Air India towards government for VVIP charter flights stands at Rs 1146.86 crore, according to the latest response from the national carrier to an RTI application.

According to the details furnished by the Air India, the Defence Ministry has outstanding bills of Rs 211.17 crore, Cabinet Secretariat and PMO Rs 543.18 crore and External Affairs Ministry Rs 392.33 crore.
The government owes crisis-stricken Air India a whopping Rs 797.95 crore as of September 30, 2019 for flights operated for VVIPs, including the president, the prime minister, the vice president and foreign dignitaries, and more than half of it—Rs 458.959 crore—is the amount outstanding for the prime minister's travel.

How can any nation carrier will survive if our own government misuse the resources?

PM Imran Khan has traveled to the US by Qatar Airways for first meet with President Trump. Narendra Modi calls himself a fakir; former Uruguayan President Jose Mujica actually lives like one.

Why the Air India should run on losses and sold for unpaid bills of the VVIP culture of PM Modi's government?

Excellent turnaround by AI Express since 2016. Year on year profits are 100%. What more do we want? But alas, this cash cow forms part of the AI Sale deed, hopefully Etihad or Singapore Airlines will pick up stake

Air India express is only namesake low cost carrier. Their tickets cost ois expensive through out the year because Mangalore passengers have no options after the closure of jet airways, specially from Kuwait. So high profit is not a surprise.

Low cost in what sense? It costs more than premium airlines to travel in this and people like us dont have options after jet airways went off air.

ONe of my friend who works with this airways told that he and his colleagues don’t fly in this only if they don’t have option

Easy to make a profit when you milk the optionless gulf passengers. In any case when the damned airline is so much in debt how can it claim it is making a profit? The interest on the debt is probably more than what they claim to have earned.
