Bengaluru: BMTC introduces Pink Sarathi jeeps to help women stranded at bus stops

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Dec 8: In a move to boost women safety, Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has introduced ‘Pink Sarathi’ jeeps, which come to the aid of women stranded at bus stops at night.

Twenty-five Pink Sarathi jeeps became operational on a pilot basis in November. Since then, 35 women who were standing alone in bus stops where the bus frequency was low after 10 pm were safely dropped home.

BMTC managing director C Shikha told media that though the women were not in direct danger, the initiative aimed at averting unsavoury situations. Apart from Pink Sarathis, BMTC will implement several initiatives that will make women feel safe in buses. ‘Panic Buttons’ will be fitted inside the buses. Also, a new app is in the pipeline where one can obtain reliable information on bus schedules, he added.

An official heading the Pink Sarathi team said that most of the 35 women were dropped home as they were waiting for buses in deserted and isolated areas. Not just that, many a times Pink Sarathis are parked near women waiting for buses as assurance and leave only after they enter the bus.

The Pink Sarathis operate in three shifts such as 6 am to 2 pm, 2 pm to 10 pm and 10 pm to 6 am.

The official explains that it is not possible for the BMTC to cover the entire city with just 25 jeeps. Hence, certain pockets are identified which could be bustling with activity in the morning but can go completely deserted in the night. "We decided not to take chances even at places like Kempegowda Bus Station after 11 pm,” the official explained.

This seems to be yet another eye washing strategy to hoodwink the public for publicity....

what a shame.....i hope someone follows up on this initiative and reports on the status of this project in a few weeks or days from now....i'm sure the cars would have disappeared.....there will be no one to question what happenned ?

where are the cars ? who got the money ? The guy who has initiated this is a bigger rapist in my eyes......he is raping the gullible citizens of this country in the name of women safety.....wake up Indians.....wake up.....its your money they are squandering and pocketing....there is no point in talking about women safety unless it is addressed at a much broader level......Politicians and Government officials are continuing to take us for a ride....

"The only solution is driver should be ladies"
If we go on doubting everything and always consider aspects in a negative point of view, then it is going to be impossible to survive in this world.
As per your suggestion what guarantee is there that the goons will not follow all ladies vehicle moving around in the night time.? May be the lady driver needs to carry a revolver too.

Waste of money. Bring law like Saudi Arabia. No one will do dare to touch the women . Just money making business , let they check how much money paid for each vehicle and how much commission paid by dealer. All this public money .

Dear Just Law can not do everything alone if no proper system to follow
for example, Hyderabad encounter. next day of encounter also there was gang rape in Hyderabad....

am not opposing strict law, mean time there should be proper system, enough security, systematic environment.

Introduction of Pink sarathi Jeeps is a step towards making systematic environment for womens safety.
