Karkala, Dec 6: Shakuntala (39), an activist under the 'Asha' scheme of the health department, who sustained injuries after a car hit her, breathed her last at a hospital on December 5.

Shakuntala had met with an accident when she was walking on the mud road near Belanje cashew factory on December 3.

She was working as an 'Asha' activist in Hebri community centre since the last about ten years, and had earned reputation of being an honest and efficient employee.

After a car hit her, a local gram panchayat member, Mahesh, and others had admitted her into a hospital. Asha' activists attached to the community health centre, doctors, and other staff extended financial help for her treatment. However, the colleagues of Shakuntala accused the owners the car which caused the accident of not helping the victim's family.

Shakuntala, who belonged to a very poor family, met with the said accident when on duty. She was the pillar of support for her family. Locals have requested the concerned to provide employment to her daughter so that she can sustain the family.
