Mangaluru, Nov 16: 'In a country well governed, poverty is something to be ashamed of. In a country badly governed wealth is something to be ashamed of'.
To enlighten us on the topic of poverty and our role in supporting to overcome it, a programme was hosted by the students of class VII C and D on the occasion of the World Day of the Poor. This day is celebrated on the 33rd Sunday of the ordinary time since 2017. It was established by Pope Francis on November 19, 2017, on the theme ‘Let us Love’ not with words, but with deeds.
The prayer group invoked God’s blessings for the day. Being the 114th death anniversary of Venerable Mother Veronica, the foundress of the Apostolic Carmel Congregation, a fitting tribute was paid to her.
The administrator of the school, Sr Carissima presided over the programme. The gathering was welcomed by Sashrika and Vismitha Pai.
The significance of the day was aptly narrated by Sridevi and Ganesh Prasad. This was followed by a meaningful skit enacted by the students, which brought out beautifully the theme of ‘World Day of the Poor 2019’ - 'The hope of the poor shall not perish forever'. An enthralling orchestra brought home the message of service toward the uplift of the downtrodden.
The chief guest, in her message, appreciated the celebration and urged the students to cooperate wholeheartedly so that no one would be deprived of the basic needs of food, clothing and shelter. She also connected the theme of the World Day of the Poor with that of the life of Venerable Mother Veronica, highlighting the sacrifices she made to found the Apostolic Carmel Congregation and thereby to serve the poor and the needy through education and other works of mercy.
Ananya and Dillon proposed the vote of thanks, Srishti U, Sanvik Rai and Sudhan were the young and energetic compeers of the programme.
As part of the World Day of the Poor, a group of students of class VII then visited Infant Jesus Kannada Higher Primary School, Maryhill and entertained them with a cultural programme followed by sharing ice cream with them.
