Mangaluru, Sep 9: In 2017, Dr Shibu Raman, an architect from Cardiff University, submitted a proposal to the city authorities in Mangaluru, to develop a partnership with Cardiff University, UK, to achieve its Smart City ambitions. The research proposal highlighted goals to achieve smart and equitable development for the city of Mangaluru.

“Achieve socially just, environmentally sustainable, economically competitive development for the city of Mangaluru. Improve the quality of life for its half a million citizens through the smart city funding and sustainability beyond four years of funding,” the proposal read.

Mangaluru is a unique opportunity for Cardiff team to develop some of their methodologies, tool kits and use them to develop understanding of smart cities and efficient urban developments. This link could turn into a strategic connection for Cardiff University with local government and with the government of India. It could result in forming strategic research and academic partnership with stake holders, funding bodies and universities in India.

The proposal has been awaiting approval. Cardiff University and School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi, conducted a joint design studio for their master’s programme broadly based on the aims and objectives of Smart City. Dr Raman and Prof Das Gupta, the heads of the department of urban design at the School of Planning and Architecture, visited Mangaluru with their students in November 2018 up to January 2019 and carried out an in-depth research in the city. This was followed by developing design proposal to address the challenges identified during their study trip. The research and proposals aimed to develop the Mangaluru smart city proposal. This was supported by Mangaluru Smart City Limited and Mangaluru City Corporation.

The students will present their findings at the Mini Town Hall, Mangaluru on September 10 and 11. This initiative is sponsored by CREDAI and supported by Mangaluru Smart City Limited and Welsh government.

Architect Dr Sibhu Raman said," There is a lot of potential for this city which has a water front. The city has a very compact core, with bigger problems like traffic. With people not having the infrastructure to walk, could lead to health issues. There are properties which are not occupied. This is a city with buildings and vehicles, but is not feasible for people.”

Chairman CREDAI Dr D B Mehta, MCC Commissioner Mohammed Nazir and others were present.

Mangaluru is the only city in Karnataka with all the modes of Transport- Air,Rail,Road and Sea.I think this is the main reason Mangaluru was included in the Smart cities mission list in one among 100 cities in India. We hope Designer and Architect will make this project very successful with new infrastructure creation, proper drainage system, proper water supply facilities, widened roads with sufficient car parking, modernized bus stand and all the surrounding rivers have to be trash, waste water and pollution free etc.
Top priority to Health, Safety and Environmental issues.
All the best to Architect students.

    Don't know anything about Cardiff.

But, unlike many cities in Britain, one of the fundamental issues for cities like Mangaluru is they are hammered by heavy rain, destroying the road surface.

The cost of maintaining the road surface is very high.

What Mangaluru probably needs is horse-drawn trams within the city-limits. Horse-drawn trams were prevalent in many cities around the world. No doubt they are little slow, but environmentally friendly, and the cost of maintaining the transport-surface will go down by 75%.

The traffic accidents will almost disappear.

More importantly, the air in the cities will be as clean as in the villages.

For a smart city the basic requirements like clean drinking water(including in late summer), good storm water drainage, uninterrupted electricity in the same order.A good stable internet connection, and MRTS like metro are essential. All the rest is secondary.Smart cities have to be people centric not road or building centric.

WHAT SMART CITY? FIRST TEACH THE AUTHORITIES HOW FILL THE POT HOLES ON MANGALORE ROADS. THEY HAVE TAKEN MANGALOREANS FOR GRANTED AS THEY KEEP THEIR MOUTHS SHUT AND SUFFER IN SILENCE. INDIA IS BOASTING OF MOON LANDING BUT OUR CIVIL ENGINEERS DON'T KNOW HOW TO CONSTRUCT ROADS THAT CAN LAST MORE THAN 6 MONTHS. IT'S NOT A JOKE BUT A REALITY. WE TALK ABOUT HI FI MALLS, APARTMENTS AND LUXURY CARS BUT WHEN IT COMES TO ROADS WE HAVE MISERABLY FAILED. IS IT FAILURE OF TECHNOLOGY OR FAILURE OF GOVERNMENTS???

Mangalore will not be a smart while seeing the duration.
Nobody is bothered to fix the problems.
We are facing one or the other problems .instead of solving there is blame game .
No.politicians want to get United & work.for the development .
    So.Mr. Shibhu Raman it's a waste of time & energy .
    We should keep
All.these useless ml politicians & all the MCC ENginners out & appointment some good young graduate engineers from each engineering colleges from.Mangalore or DK ..
    I am.sure they will.work.hard for the project

Anyone good and knowledgeable Architect can make good planning regarding Smart City. But that won't success in Mangalore. Because the old system Drainage and water pipes first of all to change. MCC has put concrete roads on those only . While constructing flats no norms are followed. I think it is better to have a new Mangalore nearby with all facilities which mentioned by Architects.
