From Kadri to coast: 200m ‘Mangaluru Eye’ to transform city’s skyline

Mangaluru, Sep 23: The Cabinet has approved the proposed ‘Mangaluru Eye’ project, a unique development featuring a 360-degree observation gallery, viewing decks, skywalk, lighthouse, open terrace, revolving restaurant and food court, similar to the model in Dubai.

The project has received official approval to be developed on around five acres near Kadri Park along National Highway 66, with the aim of promoting tourism development in the coastal districts and making Mangaluru a centre for tourism-related activities.

The project was conceived when Mulai Muhilan was the deputy commissioner, and a blueprint was prepared. Speaker U T Khader showed special interest in the project and a detailed project report on ‘Mangaluru Eye’ was prepared and sent to the state. After obtaining approval from the Finance Department, the proposal was placed before the Cabinet meeting in Mangaluru.

The Cabinet approved implementing the project under the public-private partnership (PPP) model, with the government providing Rs 60 crore. The land will be leased for 35 years. The project is expected to generate annual revenue of Rs 34.21 crore for the government, besides providing employment opportunities to local residents and boosting the economy through transportation and other activities.

The project envisages constructing a 200-metre-high commercial tower, offering visitors panoramic views of the city and the sea from a distance. It will feature an observation gallery, a revolving restaurant at the top, a large shopping mall, entertainment facilities and a 35-room hotel of three-star or higher category.

A vintage-style observation gallery showcasing the diversity of the coastal region has also been proposed. The project aims to attract tourists visiting the coastal region for religious, educational, healthcare and other purposes.

The site previously had a children's skating rink, while an adjacent area belongs to the Horticulture Department. Much of the land is currently vacant. Several government projects had been considered for the site earlier, but the district administration has now moved ahead with the ambitious ‘Mangaluru Eye’ project.

The project will come up at Kadri in Mangaluru on a total area of five acres. The tower will be 200 metres high and comprise 42 floors, with an estimated investment of Rs 350 crore. It will be developed under the PPP model and is expected to be completed within three years. The government's contribution will be Rs 60 crore.

The major attractions will include a 360-degree observation gallery, viewing decks, skywalk, lighthouse, open terrace, revolving restaurant and food court.

Glad to see such project coming up.. I had this mind from a long time near Tannir bhavi beach or sulthan battery. We have still much great potential to turn our area into a tourist hub, rather than a IT corridor / IT corridor is where we have to give a our land for other peiple to come and earn but dont spend here but they spend somewhere else.. All our previous govt ignored this.

The "Mangalore Eye" tower is most welcome to Mangalore city. It will attract tourism and employment opportunities to local candidates. If it completes within 3 years on PPP model it is a great dream come true. It reminds me of "Space Needle" of Seattle, USA.

"Mangalore Eye" is an excellent concept that can significantly boost tourism, create employment opportunities, and provide an attractive investment avenue for private investors. Around the world, the term "Eye" is commonly used for giant rotating observation wheels, such as the London Eye and Dubai Eye (Ain Dubai). In contrast, standalone observation structures are generally referred to as "Towers," such as the Eiffel Tower and Skylon Tower. Since the proposed attraction is a standalone observation structure, the name "Mangalore Tower" would be more appropriate and technically accurate. Regardless of its name, the project has the potential to become a distinctive landmark for Mangalore, enhancing the city's image and attracting visitors from across India and abroad. Such an iconic attraction can stimulate economic activity, generate employment, encourage private investment, and support the growth of the hospitality and service sectors. At the same time, equal importance must be given to developing the city's basic infrastructure. Improved urban infrastructure is essential to support increased tourist arrivals and ensure sustainable development. Furthermore, Mangalore's international air connectivity should be expanded. At present, most international flights from Mangalore are concentrated to Gulf destinations only. Introducing direct flights to additional international destinations would enhance the city's accessibility, promote tourism, facilitate business opportunities, and strengthen Mangalore's position as a major gateway to coastal Karnataka."

A welcome and exciting project for Mangaluru! The ‘Mangaluru Eye’ can become a major tourism landmark and transform the city’s skyline. At the same time, we must ensure wider roads, better traffic management, parking and public transport connectivity around the project. A dedicated communication portal with regular updates on progress, timelines and implementation would also bring greater transparency. Most importantly, timely and professional execution is key. Let the ‘Mangaluru Eye’ not only transform our skyline, but also be a symbol of planned and sustainable development for Mangaluru.

Great news, but the need of the hour for Mangalore is a Desalination Plant and a Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP). Currently this is the Only City where untreated waste water is disposed and potable water is derived from the same source, Netravathi River! So much for being a Smart City!
