Mangaluru, Aug 14: St Agnes College and Information center celebrated Librarians’ Day, along with one-day state level programme on SWAYAM/NPTEL, an online course at St Agnes College, Bendore here on Wednesday, August 14.

Walter Nandalike, founder and managing director, Daijiworld Media Group, graced the event as chief guest. Dr Mallikarjun Angadi, librarian, Central Library, NITK, Suratkal was the guest of honour. Sr Jeswina A C, Principal, St Agnes College presided over the programme. Sr Carmelita A C and Dr Gopal M Gokhale were present in dais.

In his inaugural speech, Walter Nandalike said, “When I was 11, I read a Kannada novel completely, which I borrowed from a library. During holidays, I used to pedal my bicycle up to a distance of 12 kilometer to borrow books from library. The reading habit helped me to improve my knowledge. Because of this, I wrote novels and short stories. After launching the Daijiworld.com, the reading habit has slowdown. But later, I used to learn more information from the electronic media. But I still I remember the olden days when I used to go to the library regularly.

“Now everything is controlled by technology. Because of mobiles and computer, people have forgotten the way to the library. We need to find out the ways to reach there. Libraries always function as a knowledge center of an institution or a region. The reading habit makes us wise and matured. I wish all librarians and those who use library regularly, a happy Librarians’ Day," said Walter Nandalike.

In his speech Dr Mallikarjun Angadi said, "Libraries are hearts of educational institutions. It is the information and knowledge center for every user. But now libraries have also changed and adopted modern infrastructure and technology. In the view point of students, libraries are information centers for their studies. Apart from students, libraries should attract more and more readers. Digitalization has already taken place in library world. With the help of digitalization, libraries need to create new ways of sharing communication with the readers. Librarians need to update their skills through online courses. They should become committed towards the readers.”

In her presidential address Sr Jeswina said "Every year, St Agnes celebrates Dr S R Ranganath’s Day. S R Ranganathan is a great visionary and father of library science. For his contribution to library science, government of India honoured him with Padmashree award. This year we are we are celebrating this day with SWAYAM/NPTEL, an online course. I am happy with the activities of our library. In 2021 we are celebrating our centenary. So currently we are connecting each programme to our centenary celebration. I wish a happy Librarian’s Day for all librarians and those who use the libraries."
