'Janata maalik hai': Rahul Gandhi accepts defeat, congratulates Modi

New Delhi, May 23 (IANS): Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday accepted the shocking defeat in the Lok Sabha elections as "people's verdict" and congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the victory.

Addressing a brief press conference at the party headquarters here as the results trickled in, Gandhi also conceded defeat in the Amethi Lok Sabha constituency, the pocket borough of his family, and congratulated Union Minister Smriti Irani for the victory.

He, however, refused to state what went wrong for the party, and suggested that the Congress Working Committee (CWC) would decide whether he would continue as the party chief.

"It's between me and the party and me and the CWC," he said when asked whether he would step down.

"I had said during campaign that 'janata maalik hai' (people are the decision-makers) and the 'maalik' has given the verdict," Gandhi said.

"First of all, I want to congratulate Modiji and the BJP. We have to accept that Modiji has won this election," the Congress President said.

Asked about the reasons for the debacle, he evaded the query by saying "I don't want to colour the discussion by saying what went wrong."

Questioned about Amethi, the outgoing MP from the constituency said, "I can say that Smritiji has won. I congratulate her."

Gandhi said he respected the verdict given by the people of Amethi and hoped that Irani would live up to the trust reposed in her by the people of the constituency.

He said his party's fight against the BJP was ideological and it will continue.

Gandhi also asked the party cadres to keep fighting for the Congress ideology.

Rahul began the Presidency in right earnest and with good thought. If you go back and look at MP, Rajastan, Gujrat Elections - he failed to keep the young leaders in front; rather he sacrificed young and upcoming leaders like Pilot, Scindia, etc in favour of leaders like Gehlot, Kamal Nath, and the like. This gave a negative message to the Congress supporters. Why Sheila Dixit was brought into Delhi; her political career was long over. During Canvassing the theme should have been stuck to JOBS - SAFEGUARDING WOMEN - RELIEF TO FARMERS - FREE EDUCATION AND HEALTH CARE... rather the slogan CHOWKIDHAR CHOR HAI .. depleted the scale of Congress.

Best advice is -- Rahul please step down, hand over the reigns to Scindia, Shashi Tharoor, Milind Deora or Sachin Pilot ... you will see this party bouncing back. The BJP will have nothing to talk about.... DYNASTY? FOR EG.

if Rahul, Siddu, Sidhu, Ayyar, Singhvi…. kept quiet, congress would have get more seats even without campaign. vote bank politics, drama, chowkidar chor hai & Rafel are the main reason for congress defeat. they didn't respect the PM post & Army. everytime they asked proof. now people of India shown the proof.

CONGRESS need a good diversifying leader. FOR a prime minister POSSITION RAHUL GANDHI IS too soft. Lack of admin experiences. He had OPPORTUNITY. Every interaction is an opportunity to learn. Meanwhile I congratulate BJP on winning the election. Hope MODI WILL make difference INSTEAD LIES. Together we can make world BETTER place.

This guy has to work hard, respect everyone especially party people, so many people left congress because of this guys attitude. He has so much opportunity to him to lead the party also he should thank Modi to making him a politician. He had to start learning from the first day itself he wasted 10 years in MMS rule, it does not work like if is the son of Rajiv G he will learn politics just like that, woh din Gaye.

Also congress party should stop appeasing the minorities end of the day minority votes hardly counts, do a fair deal and stop taking people or any religion for granted work for them. Also stop putting blames with out proving that.

Only minority wants to see him as PM so reason is simple religion because congress worked for them the most it should stop see everyone equelly. Period.

When Hindus support BJP, they are named as uncultured, uncivilized... but here i can see a community supporting and feeling very very bad for the defeat of congress.... Now they will come out stating that EVM is the problem... but see the people out there.. 80% are in support to Modiji.. and hence all BJP candidates have won... yes all BJP candidates are not suitable to be the winners but even Congi leaders are not saint... and forget about PAPPU.. he is not fit to be a PM and i dont understand how people come out in support of him.... BJP has won just because people need MODIJI... stop pointing out at people who are in support of BJP... and accept the truth...

    Two things should happen now:

    1. Rahul should step down and let someone else charismatic and worthy take over the reins of the party as this was a humiliating defeat.
    2. The Congress should rethink their strategies as clearly their appeasement to get minority votes is not working. If the BJP got that many seats it means that they did get votes from minorities in substantial numbers.

It is time Mr. Rahul Gandhi steps down and makes way for more dynamic leadership. I congratulate Mr. Modi for winning massive mandate of the people and hope history does not repeat itself as it happened during the Congress rule of late
Smt. Indira Gandhi as she too had with massive mandate during her time.

I hope atleast with this decimation Rahul acknowledges that he is NOT the person to lead Congress unless he wishes to see Congress disappearing from Indian politics... He doesn't simply have the charisma of a mass leader and him continuing with his role would be great injustice to the great congress leaders of the past. His continuity will only help BJP easily win again in the future continue with their propaganda of hijacking all public institutions and changing the secular facet of India... Rahul continuing as the president of congress if equally dangerous as Modi continuing as the PM of India... One fails the democracy intentionally and other fails the democracy due his inability to win elections or even to build a strong opposition...The coming five years will be interesting and probably equally scary..

I strongly suspect there is some foul play here...... In EVM's. One day the truth will come out. Selected candidates are targeted for their routing........ Karge, Deora, Sindhya and many more...... Modi is not realizing he is sitting on his own created fire pane...... Like condition of economy, jobs, etc.gh For him next five years will be testing as he cannot blame Nehru, Congress etc, his next five years perforemence will be compared and measured to his own five years previous rule. Though he won, but tough time is ahead for him.

Rahul Gandhi is representation of the problem that is ailing leadership of India, in every walks of life.
You need to have a backing, family reputation and few families will control India.
Congress needs to overhaul how they work. Rahul Gandhi cannot be part of that overhaul, but cleanup. Modi was noone when he came in the Sangh and BJP. Rahul Gandhi was a natural succession that was thrust upon this country by Congress party.
Flavor of this is observed in the military appointments, bureaucracy, politics, and all the institutions in India. Talent and ability based appointments have become alien to us.
Rahul Gandhi, the Scindias, the Gowdas please realize that it is a new India where, family affiliations matter little. You need to deliver and have a vision.

I sincerely feel that even though Rahul has put in all his efforts, they were clearly not enough. My advice to him is take a break from politics, get married, start a family, gain some maturity and then maybe enter politics again. Till then make way for someone else more competent to take the reins of the party.
Even though we have a strong ruling party, the presence of a strong opposition is equally important for the success of our democratic process. Right now, we just have a very fragmented opposition and that is very dangerous.

Yes if you call all voters of BJP as bhakths, then no problem for us. you can call so. Yes we indeed run away with the victory against most corrupted party of the world. I hope atleast now you will answer my question: Why Sonia Gandhi and Rahul is having Anticipatory bail in national herold case??? If someone tell me that I have done something wrong, I will not take anticipatory bail unless i had done something wrong. Why i should get scared for someone.... i hope you will ask Rahul this question and clarify me. I have this question since a year or so. :)

Rahul was graceful in defeat...he tried his best....due to heavy ' Corruption Baggage' of previous CONgress administrations he was not able to succeed this time...

He is young ...this is not end of the road for him...

Modi by and large...given a clean administration in Delhi...except Rafale deal...better stop 'Rafale type of deals' moving forward...

Hope by end of Modijis second term...India will be stronger and prosperous in the world...

Last but not the least...BJPee leadership in Karnataka is more corrupt and 'Good for nothing'...than CONgress itself...

If Modi's administration is clean then why is he running away from parliamentary debates, press conferences, Q & A sessions????...A PM should feel bold to answer people's questions openly guilt free.
