Kyiv, Jul 18: A disturbing video has surfaced from Ukraine's capital, showing a young woman being brutally assaulted inside a crowded metro train in Kyiv, allegedly for shouting pro-Russian slogans. The viral footage has triggered outrage and raised serious concerns about mob violence and political tensions amid the ongoing war with Russia.
In the video, a man in a white t-shirt is seen repeatedly slapping and kicking the woman, while shocked commuters watch without stepping in. At one point, a violent slap causes the woman’s head to strike a pole. While a female passenger attempts to intervene, two other men later drag the woman again, escalating the attack.
Russian state media outlet RT, which shared the video widely, claimed the crowd was cheering the assault, quoting onlookers allegedly saying, "She's for Russia, so it's allowed." The post also questioned Western support for Ukraine, asking, “Is this what ‘democracy’ looks like under Ukraine’s Western-backed regime?”
However, Ukrainian media presented a different account. According to reports by Ukrainian outlet Pryamy, the incident occurred on July 17 after the woman began shouting slogans such as "Glory to Russia" and used vulgar language to provoke fellow passengers. The act allegedly triggered the violent reaction seen in the footage.
Following the incident, the woman was reportedly forced off the train. Ukrainian law enforcement confirmed they became aware of the assault through social media and have since launched an investigation. Authorities said efforts are underway to identify all individuals involved in the violence.
“We urge citizens to abide by the law. If you witness a crime, please report it to the police rather than take matters into your own hands,” the police said in a statement.
The incident highlights the heightened sensitivities and deep societal divisions in Ukraine as the country continues to battle Russian aggression, while also dealing with the challenges of internal stability and rule of law.
