Indian priest sentenced to 6 years in prison for sexually abusing minor

New York, Mar 30(Agencies): A 38-year-old Indian former Roman Catholic priest has been sentenced to six years in prison for sexually abusing a minor girl in the US.

The accused has been identified as John Praveen, 38, who pleaded guilty in February to sexually touching a 13-year-old girl in the Rapid City church, South Dakota over her clothes last year.

According to Rapid City Journal newspaper, Judge Steven Mandel handed down the sentence on Friday after prosecutors asked for the maximum of one year in prison. Mandel said that was "not adequate" for Praveen's crime, the report said.

He sentenced Praveen to six years in prison, minus 178 days of time served, and said he would be eligible for parole after three years.

The sentencing came after Praveen pleaded guilty to one count of having sexual contact with a child under the age of 16, a crime that carries a maximum 15-year punishment, the report said.

Mandel said if Praveen is granted parole, the parole board could ask Homeland Security to immediately deport him to Hyderabad or have him first serve parole in any state, the report added.

Praveen had joined the Rapid City Diocese for a 10-year assignment in December 2017.

He apologised and told the court he wishes he could take back what he did.

I "send my sincere apologies to the family and the victim about what I have done," Praveen said through tears in court Friday. He said he knows saying sorry isn't enough, and that he wishes he could take back what he did. He promised to never hurt anyone again.

In an emailed statement, Rapid City Bishop Robert Gruss apologised to the victim and her family on behalf of the Diocese of Rapid City, calling Praveen's actions "sinful," traumatic and a betrayal.

"I am deeply sorry that they had to experience these sinful actions at the hands of a priest," Gruss said.

"The pain and suffering of this family have been great. Only those who have been victims of abuse of any kind can understand the trauma. The experience of betrayal is great. Crimes of sexual abuse can never be tolerated, most especially among priests."

Time to set our own house first.

Main problem is we did not sweep under the carpet and pushed the issues under the rug systematically.

Please do not go to save one person / religion by killing 1000 souls, People in position are accountable for that.

Jesus Christ by His death defeated the power of sin. A true believer will let the Holy Spirit guide his walk so he can live in holiness. By offering grace to sinners, Jesus raised the bar towards holiness

    @Sheryl,

The idea of offering grace to all sinners doesn't work practically. It will surely have adverse impact on the good people. There is a life for the good people in the punishment for bad people.

Sorry priest you lied to US Courts, hard luck for you in USA to enjoy, you would have been safe in India. Do not ever do these mistakes as you might have done it in India. This is a lesson to all priests who are serving for Christians and secret lusts is most danger than open, priests tell the truth openly if you sin and do not beg once you are caught.USA has 0 tolerance for lies and two times more punishment for lies.

The marriage and lust full acts are in two different directions.Even David was not spared in the old testament. No where we find justficstion of wrongful act. The act is done in the holy place and in the guise of holy. Let them repent .The marriage and allowing lust in the church not solution.we are asked to obey one Good and not Devil. The church must castout demonic acts and thought in the holy place or we should stop going to church as Jesus said you need not go any where to pray

As you wanted, these priests did not marry to become a priests.

But, you have practically seen the visible results of this practice. Further, If it were to 1 or 2 cases of rapes and abuses here and there, then you still had to something to argue that these were isolated cases and has no relationship with issue of not marrying. But when this has become a global phenomenon, it clearly suggests a direct link between the cases of abuses and the practice of not marrying.

St. Peter, the foundation of the church, was a married man. The Catholic church is established by common people, with their own rules and regulations. Calibacy is one of the rules. Changing it to married priest is also in the hands of the church heads.

Its better to change it than the priestly members deceiving their vow to calibacy.

It be the best decision DONE in Catholic Community all over the World
Many youngster will join Priesthood and Sisters
Let their Children grow up to Priest and Sisters
There will be shortage of Church leaders

I think it's better if catholic priest permitted to marry, lead a decent family life and serve the lord, instead of getting temptation in this materialistic life and disturbing others life, their own and ruining the image. It may solve many problems!

Hope Pope Francis can allow married men to be a priest or allow the priest to be married if they wish to. It is hard for human control natural feeling even though they control. It is time for a change with real experiences of incidence happening arround us.

Here you go. Absolutely right. No one can overpower his natural desires throughout his life. Either he will sin literally or sin in his heart when confronted with the real situation/opportunity. Satan is always with a plan to corrupt the hearts of each and every one of us. So allow what is absolutely natural to the human beings.

    Right.
I think recently Pope Francis had said that, Catholic Church may have to permit Married Priest at least in remote areas. Let's hope!
It's not easy to bring the change after 2000 years history. He/ his team has to think about the impact on present Church set up all over the world!

Alwyn, one way what you said is right..other side what i say is tha, those who are unable to control their desires, should quit the religious life and marry. There is no harm but troubling like this is disgrace to the community/for his congregation /family moreover mental torture for girls who undergo such incidents. Let me say, if pope allows to marry priests then even permission should be granted to our nuns too. Justice to all.
