Jet passengers stranded at Abu Dhabi as airline cancels flights

New Delhi, Mar 19 (IANS): Passengers have been stranded at Abu Dhabi airport, finding it tough to return over the sudden cancellation of flights by Jet Airways.

The cash-strapped Jet Airways, which has been forced to ground over 50 per cent of its fleet due to non-payment of amounts outstanding to lessors, is regularly grounding aircraft as it unable to pay the lessors.

"Jet Airways has cancelled all their flights from Abu Dhabi with immediate effect from March 18, 2019, due to operational reasons, further to the short notice of flight cancellation, HUB (Abu Dhabi) may face a minor disruption," said Etihad in a statement.

The cancellation comes on the day, which was set by founder and Chairman Naresh Goyal to announce an update on the resolution plan.

On Monday too, following the similar pattern, Jet Airways informed BSE that four aircraft were informed to be grounded due to non-payment of amounts outstanding to lessors.

Earlier, cash-strapped Jet Airways pilots' union had written to the government, seeking its help in recovering their pending salaries along with the accumulated interest.

Jet Airways currently has 1,900 pilots on its rolls.

In a letter written to Minister of Labour and Employment Santosh Gangwar, the National Aviators Guild (NAG), which represents the majority of Jet's pilots, said that all pleas to the Jet management in this regard "have fallen on deaf ears".

In the letter, a copy of which was accessed by IANS, NAG General Secretary Tej Sood, wrote, "This situation is leading to extreme tension and frustration among our members, hardly an ideal situation for pilots in the cockpit. Monthly EMIs have to be met, school & college fees have to be paid, along with medical bills of ageing parents etc."

Ironically, Jet has cancelled its flights from Abu Dhabi on a day when it was supposed to announce a resolution plan to its employees.

Several of Jet pilots have been approached by rival IndiGo and GoAir and they would decide on their future course depending on what Goyal tells them.

How they got into loss?? Two months back they charged me Rs.150/- for printing their own ticket at jet Airways office!! There was no Wifi and picture quality of ticket was poor though PNR was very clear! I will not blame security as demanded proper print. When I told the security about day light robbery charge for the ticket print, they felt very sad! Thats the story of jet most of the time flying full occupancy!

never thought jet is going to be bankrupt. before 2014 jet was quit well in its business. however after 2014 bad economic policies of BJP govt lead to catastrophic situation of jet. if such a large company situation is like this what about small business situation in india. God save our country from economic crisis which present govt brought.

Naresh Goyal's stubbornness at refusing to let go of the control is causing these problems. Any new investor wants him out. He should see the writing on the wall and gracefully quit, or else this airline will go the Kingfisher way.

It is a shame that Jet Airways passengers have to go through this ordeal. These passengers have booked their flight in advance paying in full and now I do not know what would be their state. I came from New York in Dec. 2019 by Itihad Airlines to Abu Dhabi and flew to Mangalore by Jet Airways as that was the only choice for me to go to Mangalore. I did not have any problem and in fact I travelled many times by Jet Airways to other destinations. Now I planning to go back to New York by the same route. With this cancellations by Jet Airways, I am in a fix. I am sure there will be many other passengers who will go through problem.

You should have well understood what was coming seeing the recent negative developments taking in JA!!

Increasing flight cancellations at Jet Airways have also prompted Air Passengers Association of India (APAI) to demand that the airline be barred from any advance bookings. Refunding disgruntled customers would worsen the airline's cash position.

With seeing the murky developments, it appears like Jet is another KFA in the making (staff salary pending for 3 months) as it would be very difficult to find a buyer with "debts" mounting??
