Udupi, Oct 20: Three people including a boy drowned in separate incidents which happened at Malpe in the district and Beltangady in Dakshina Kannada district on Friday October 19. A youth was saved from the jaws of death at Panambur beach.
A student, identified as Pratheek (19) had visited River Netravati at Indabettu in Beltangady taluk for taking bath. He drowned in the river. Although the fire brigade personnel from Beltangady rushed to the spot and undertook elaborate rescue operation, the youngster's mortal remains could not be found.
Pratheek was the son of Sanjeeva Gowda from Putrabettu. After lunch on Friday, he had left in the company of some friends to roam around. Later it appears that he went to the river either to take bath or to catch fish. Pratheek was the third among four sons of Sanjeeva. He used to reside in the house of his grandparents at Kanarpa for study. He was a diploma student of a private college near Beltangady.
The locals said that the spot where Pratheek entered the river is known to be very dangerous. Moreover, on account of rain, water level in the river was high. Expert divers also worked hand in hand with firemen but no trace of the youth could be found till nightfall. Beltangady police visited the spot and collected details.
Suresh (29) from Damaspet, Tumakuru, and Mokshit (9) from Belur in Hassan district drowned in the sea at Malpe beach on Friday.
Suresh was a member of an eighteen-member group that had visited Sabarimala and Dharmasthala. On way home, the group had come to Malpe beach. Suresh was playing in the water about 100 metres away to the north, when he was suddenly dragged by the undercurrent. Although the team of lifeguards rescued him and took him to the hospital, he died on the way. Suresh, working as clerk in a school at Tumakuru, had married four months back, it is said.
Moskhit had come to the beach along with his parents. When he was playing in the beach, a huge wave surged ahead and lashed him. The boy collapsed on the spot and breathed his last instantly. He was a fourth standard student. His father, Ananth, happens to be a lawyer, while mother works for SCDCC Bank, it is said.
Malpe police visited the spot and registered cases. The bodies were kept in the district hospital.
A youth who had arrived at Panambur beach on Friday afternoon was about to drown due to huge waves. He was saved by lifeguards. The youth has been identified as Vishwajit Sahu (18) from Kolkata. He works for a private firm in Ganjimutt, Mangaluru.
