Mangalore, Sep 28: Editors Award, instituted by the Editors' Club, Dakshina Kannada district, was conferred on Walter Nandalike, editor-in-chief, Daijiworld.com at a glittering ceremony at Town Hall here on Wednesday September 28.

The award was presented for Walter Nandalike's editorial 'Captured Sex - a Stunning Warning to Parents, Teachers, and the Public' published on daijiworld.com sometime ago. Anisa Fathima, resident editor of Daijiworld.com received the award on his behalf.

V Sadananda Shetty (sports), Dharmadarshi Harikrishna Punaroor (literature), Lancy Mascarenhas (business), Sripathi Bhat (industry), N B Aboobakkar (public service), Prof P C M Kunhi (education) and Dharmapal Devadiga (non-resident Kannadiga) were also honoured with awards.

The awards were handed over by vice-chancellor of Mangalore University Prof T C Shivashankar Murthy who was the chief guest. In his address, he said that media plays a vital role in bringing the society together and that it is a catalyst for change. Healthcare, environment, whatever the field, the media has highlighted all aspects of the modern world, he said, adding that editors deserve recognition and honour for their role in moulding public opinion and bringing postive change in the society. "Nobody starts a venture with the intention of winning awards. It is out of one's desire to serve the society or for inner satisfaction that one starts a venture," he noted, while congratulating the awardees and the organisers.

The programme was inaugurated by S Ganesh Rao, president, Karavali Group of Colleges. Addressing the gathering, he lauded the efforts of the organisers and the Editors Club for recognising true achievers and honouring them for their work and said that media not only influences but helps the society move forward in various ways. Media goes beyond the barriers of caste, religion and so on, and focuses on overall development and advancement of the society by exposing its ills and lauding its positive aspects, he added.

Sadanand Shetty, PCM Kunhi and N B Aboobakker acknowledged the honour bestowed on them on behalf of all the awardees.

Towards the end, Tulu comedy play 'Oikla Yoga Bodu' was staged which had the audience in splits of laughter.

Earlier, Nritya Bharati dance troupe presented beautiful and graceful performances on Kannada and Tulu songs, including the official state anthem 'Jaya Bharata Jananiya Tanujate'. Maithri Bhat, semi-classical dancer also performed. They were honoured with mementoes.

The programme was part of the 'Patrika Samavesha' organised by the Editors Club earlier in the day.

The award presentation ceremony was telecast live on local channels.

It was a nice gesture on the part of Mangalore University to Walter Nandalike for the Editors Award. Awards and recognitions are essential for the deserving candidates so that many more will follow the band wagon in future years.

It was nice to see Shaikha Fatima Anisha receiving the recognition in the absence of Walter Nandalike. Anisha, you look like the Maharani of Gwalior in the picture since we have not seen you for so many years. Best of luck.
