Bantwal: Road dispute near church at Chelur leads to cross complaints; two cases registered

Bantwal, Mar 17: The rural police here have registered two cases following a dispute over a road leading to a house at Chelur in Ullal, based on complaints filed by both parties involved in the incident.

According to a complaint filed by Diana Justin D’Souza (51), a resident of Chelur in Ullal, there has been a dispute between her and the local church authorities regarding the road leading to her house. She alleged that on March 14, persons associated with the church carried out road work using a JCB and blocked the road, preventing her from accessing her house.

When the complainant and her children requested that the road be cleared to allow them to reach their home, the accused — Jacinta D’Souza, Jacinta Crasta, Anisha D’Souza, Hilda Montero, Dora Rodrigues, Allen Rose and others — allegedly assaulted her, abused her in foul language and issued death threats. Following the assault, the complainant sustained injuries and was admitted as an inpatient at Bantwal Government Hospital for treatment.

Based on her complaint, Bantwal Rural police have registered a case (Crime No. 37/2026) under Sections 189(2), 191(2), 115(2), 382, 351(2) read with 190 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

In a counter complaint related to the same incident, it has been alleged that on March 14, evening, when road work was being carried out using a JCB, Diana D’Souza obstructed the work and assaulted the complainant Jacinta D’Souza (54), besides verbally abusing her. It has also been alleged that another accused, identified as Vinil, abused the complainant in foul language and issued death threats.

Jacinta D’Souza reportedly sustained injuries in the incident and received treatment at Bantwal Government Hospital.

Based on this counter complaint, Bantwal Rural police have registered another case (Crime No. 38/2026) under Sections 352, 115(2), 118(1), 351(2) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Police said that investigations into both cases are underway.
