Moodbidri, Mar 17: Sexual harassment allegations have been levelled against Moodbidri police station inspector Sandesh B G.

Three women have submitted a complaint in Bengaluru to the chief minister, home minister, director general of police, chief secretary of the government and the state women’s commission, seeking a high-level investigation into the matter.

According to the complaint filed by one of the women, her husband had been arrested in a case two years ago. The inspector allegedly told her that she would have to cooperate sexually if she wanted her husband to be released. He had also demanded Rs 25 lac and had threatened to open a rowdy sheet against her husband.

The complaint further states that the inspector would allegedly jump over the compound wall and enter the house at night and hold her hand and force her to dance. It is also alleged that he had behaved in a similar manner earlier while he was posted at the Beltangady police station. The complaint further mentions that he had also sexually harassed women who came to the police station for passport verification and other work, but the victims had hesitated to lodge complaints.

Though a complaint had been submitted to the Mangaluru city police commissioner, no action had been taken. In such a situation, there are doubts whether a fair investigation would be conducted by the Mangaluru police. The complainants have therefore demanded that a special investigation team be formed or that the case be handed over to the CID for investigation. They have also sought that the officer be relieved from duty.

Based on the complaints received against the inspector, a departmental inquiry has been initiated. Deputy Commissioner of Police Mithun said that an investigation has begun under the leadership of the North ACP and further action will be taken based on the report.

In connection with the case, the state women’s commission has written to Mangaluru city police commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy. The commission has taken note of the alleged misconduct and dereliction of duty by a government officer who is expected to ensure the safety of women, and has termed it a serious matter.

In its letter, the commission has directed that the case be examined as per rules and appropriate disciplinary action be taken, and that a report be submitted.
