Holder of Indian passport, who is away from India for one year or more, can bring one kg of gold in any form like ornaments or biscuits. Paying 10.75 percent duty, the person could have brought the gold legally, if he was outside India for a year. Looks like this passenger is a carrier for some party. To stop smuggling, jewellers have requested the govt to bring down the duty to 4 percent as prevailing in other countries. Govt is afraid, by allowing 4 percent duty, many people will bring gold legally, which will have an impact on foreign exchange remittences.
