Mangalore, Sep 29: To tackle quack menace in the city, Indian Medical Association (IMA) South Kanara branch president Dr B Devdas Rai suggested that patients look for the display of a certificate by the Karnataka Medical Council (KMC) at the place of the doctor's practice.

He was addressing a press conference in the city on Thursday September 28. He expressed concern over the rising number of cases of fake doctors in the city and cited illiteracy, poverty and inferiority complex among patients as the reasons behind this menace.

Recently, there was a case of a person posing as a specialist doctor and cheating hundreds of students and teachers and of ayurvedic and homeopathic doctors prescribing allopathic medicines. He further said that the existence of quacks adversely affects the reputation of the medical profession also.

He assured that the IMA has already decided to take measures in this regard and an "anti-quackery committee" headed by Dr Sureshchandra Shetty will help to mass create public awareness on this.

The deputy commissioner and superintendent of police have also expressed support for the campaign by promising to raid the premises of quacks. The public may also contact IMA for more information.

Among those present at the meet were Dr J P Shetty, Dr Satish Shetty and Dr Sureshchandra Shetty.
