Udupi, Oct 8: Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna met energy minister K J George and submitted a memorandum seeking the upgradation of MESCOM substations in the Udupi Assembly constituency to ensure uninterrupted power supply and address persistent low-voltage issues.
Udupi, being the district headquarters, has witnessed rapid growth in the education, healthcare, fisheries, industrial, tourism and religious sectors. With increasing urbanisation, development of new residential layouts and apartments, and expansion of commercial and industrial activities, the demand for electricity in the constituency has been steadily rising.
Residents in Udupi city and rural areas of the Brahmavar region have been facing problems such as low voltage, power interruptions and overloading of transformers. Against this backdrop, Suvarna stressed the need to strengthen the power infrastructure through the installation of new transformers, construction of new substations and upgradation of existing substations.

He also sought the installation of additional transformers wherever required, enhancement of the capacity of existing transformers, upgradation of old power lines and construction of new cables and distribution networks. Permanent measures to address low-voltage problems and adequate power infrastructure for rapidly developing residential layouts should also be taken up on priority, he said.
Suvarna further requested that street-lighting facilities and high-mast lights at major roads and junctions be strengthened.
As Udupi is the district headquarters, ensuring a continuous and quality power supply is essential, Suvarna said. Taking into account the present and future electricity requirements of the constituency, he urged the energy minister to sanction special funds to MESCOM on an urgent basis and take up the required infrastructure development works on priority.
