Mangaluru, Oct 6: Auto-rickshaw passengers in Dakshina Kannada (DK) will have to pay revised fares from November 1, with the District Regional Transport Authority approving the new rates citing a rise in fuel prices and vehicle spare-part costs.

Under the revised fare structure, the minimum fare for the first 1.5 km is Rs 40, applicable to a maximum of three passengers. Thereafter, passengers will be charged Rs 23 per km, again for a maximum of three passengers.

The revised waiting charges state that the first 10 minutes will be free, after which Rs 5 will be charged for every 15 minutes or part thereof.

For luggage, at least one passenger must accompany the luggage. The first 20 kg will be carried free of charge, after which Rs 5 will be charged for every additional 20 kg or part thereof.

Between 10.00 pm and 5.00 am, autos may charge 1.5 times the normal fare.

The Regional Transport Authority has directed that the approved fare chart must be prominently displayed in every auto, where it is clearly visible to passengers.

Auto drivers and owners must also ensure that their digital meters are recalibrated and sealed within the stipulated period.

Drivers have been instructed to collect only the revised meter fare corresponding to the journey undertaken.

The authority has issued a stern warning against overcharging and other violations. Those found collecting more than the prescribed fare or violating the rules will face legal penalties, including fines, suspension of permits or cancellation of permits, as applicable, according to the Authority.

The revised fares have been fixed considering both the welfare of auto drivers and the interests of the public, the Authority said.
