Mumbai, Sep 24: Ajay Jamwal has been appointed as the Maharashtra Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) organisational general secretary, marking a significant change in the party's organisational structure in the state.
Jamwal, who was earlier the organisational general secretary for Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, will now be based in Mumbai. His appointment to the Maharashtra post had been expected for some time.
The BJP has also appointed Satish Dhond as Maharashtra Pradesh co-organisational general secretary. Dhond has extensive organisational experience, including work in West Bengal and several other states, besides experience with the BJP's organisational activities and tribal wing. His base will be Nagpur, with the appointment expected to strengthen the party's organisational focus in the Vidarbha region.
The appointments were announced on September 24, 2026, with the approval of BJP national president Nitin Nabin. Jamwal's appointment is also significant from the perspective of coordination between the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
The post of organisational general secretary has traditionally been associated with full-time RSS pracharaks deputed to work within the BJP and serves as an important link between the party organisation and the RSS. The post had remained vacant in the Maharashtra BJP for a considerable period.
Vijay Puranik had earlier served as the Maharashtra BJP's organisational general secretary. A full-time RSS pracharak, Puranik was appointed to the post in 2018 but was relieved of the responsibility in 2021. Subsequently, the Maharashtra BJP did not appoint another full-time RSS pracharak to the post.
With Jamwal's appointment, the organisational arrangement involving an RSS pracharak has now returned to the state BJP.
Jamwal has extensive organisational experience. He worked with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad before serving as an RSS pracharak. He subsequently handled organisational responsibilities for the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and the northeastern states.
In 2022, he was appointed regional organisational general secretary for Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. His appointment to Maharashtra now brings his organisational experience to the state, with Mumbai serving as his base.
