Kaup, Sep 21: Four persons allegedly involved in a cattle theft case registered at Shirva police station have been arrested within 24 hours of the registration of the case, police said.

According to the complaint, on September 19 at around 4 pm, Vasanti Sunitha Quadros of Nadiguttu in Kalathur village, Kaup taluk, noticed that one of her five cattle, a two-year-old black cow, was missing. While searching for the animal, she noticed a tempo parked nearby. On checking the vehicle, she found her missing cattle along with another cow. Both animals had allegedly been tied in a manner that caused distress.

The vehicle bearing registration number KA 19 B 5641 was allegedly found with Umarabba and three others near it. When they noticed the complainant, they reportedly drove away in the tempo.

Based on the complaint filed by Vasanti Sunitha Quadros, Shirva police registered a case and launched an investigation.

Police arrested the first accused, Umarabba (64), a resident of Kalathur village, on September 19 and produced him before the court. He was subsequently remanded to judicial custody.

Meanwhile, the three absconding accused — Mohammed Shareef (31), Shamshuddin (57); and Mohammed Aseer (24), all residents of Kalathur village — were traced and arrested at Koppalangadi in Kaup on September 20. The vehicle allegedly used in the offence, bearing registration number KA 19 B 5641, and the cattle were seized.

The operation was conducted under the leadership of Karkala sub-divisional assistant superintendent of police Ishita Gupta and Kaup circle inspector Azmath Ali.

Shirva sub-inspector Manjunath Marabad, Padubidri sub-inspector Shaktivellu E, Anil Kumar T Naik, Hebri sub-inspector Lohith Kumar, along with personnel from Shirva, Kaup and Padubidri police stations and the CDR team of the Udupi district police office, participated in the operation.
