Mangaluru, Sep 15: A peer-led suicide prevention programme was organized by Agnes towards Community, Women’s Cell, Human Rights, and Hindi Sangh of St Agnes College (Autonomous), Mangaluru, on September 12 at 11:45 a.m. in A2. The programme was conducted with the objective of creating awareness about mental health, emotional well-being, and the importance of peer support in preventing suicide.
The session was led by Dr. Rameela Shekhar, Mental Health Professional and Trainer, who addressed the participants on the significance of recognizing emotional distress and responding to individuals who may be struggling with mental-health concerns. The programme emphasized the importance of empathy, active listening, communication, and seeking timely professional help. It also highlighted the valuable role that peers can play in creating a supportive and caring environment.






The programme was compered by Adithi Kamath IIBCA, who coordinated the proceedings and guided the audience through the various segments of the event. The session was informative and thought-provoking, encouraging students to be more sensitive towards the emotional needs of others and to contribute towards building a mentally healthy community.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Sharvari II B.Sc., who expressed gratitude to the resource person, organizers, faculty members, and students for their support and participation. At the end of the programme, pamphlets were distributed by the Suicide Lifeline volunteers, containing helpline numbers for those seeking mental-health support and assistance.
The programme was a meaningful initiative towards promoting mental health awareness, peer support, and suicide prevention, leaving the participants with a stronger understanding of the importance of compassion, timely intervention, and seeking help when needed. The session also motivated students to become more responsible and supportive peers, thereby contributing to a healthier and safer college community.
