Madrid, Sep 14: Mercedes star driver and Formula 1 championship leader Kimi Antonelli further cemented his grip on the drivers' standings by clinching victory in the inaugural Madrid Grand Prix here on Sunday.

The Italian crossed the chequered flag ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen and pole-sitter Lando Norris of McLaren in a tactical battle dominated by pit-stop strategy.

Starting second on the grid, Antonelli fought hard in the opening exchanges of the 57-lap race, cutting two corners early on while attempting to pass Norris, who held an initial narrow lead.

The turning point of the race arrived when Aston Martin's Lance Stroll was forced to retire due to brake issues, triggering a Virtual Safety Car (VSC). Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton had also suffered an early exit due to similar brake problems.

Capitalizing on the VSC window, Antonelli, his Mercedes teammate George Russell, and Verstappen immediately ducked into the pits for fresh rubber. Norris missed the pit window and subsequently suffered a prolonged tire change, rejoining down in fifth place.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc temporarily took the lead by delaying his pit stop in hopes of a full Safety Car or Red Flag. However, with no further interruptions materializing, Leclerc was forced to box on lap 48, handing the lead back to Antonelli.

In the closing stages, Antonelli built a comfortable margin at the front. Behind him, Norris mounted a fierce charge on Verstappen, drawing alongside the Dutchman after Verstappen ran wide at Turn 5, but was ultimately unable to complete the pass and settled for third.

Leclerc finished fourth, while Russell completed the top five.

With this triumph, Antonelli has extended his lead at the top of the Drivers' Championship to a commanding 81 points.
